“Mind, Body & Soul” The Importance of Being Well-Rounded

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

With mid-terms coming up in less than two weeks, it is important to learn how to be a well-rounded student.  Class assignments, organization meetings and important campus events can sometimes keep you away from completing personal tasks. Returning family phone calls, updating social media statues and even getting a good night’s sleep can go undone, especially if you’re having a hectic week. Although school is and should be your first priority, it is also essential to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. With these helpful tips, you can be on your way to a “stress-free” lifestyle before the end of the semester!

1. “Me, myself & I”

Creating a time throughout the day that is strictly dedicated to being by yourself is fundamental in becoming a better you. Dr. Sherrie Bourg Carter of High Octane Women suggests that “constantly being on the go doesn’t give your brain a chance to rest and replenish itself. Being by yourself with no distractions gives you the chance to clear your mind, focus, and think more clearly. It’s an opportunity to revitalize your mind and body at the same time.” Try to pick a time in your busy schedule where you can just be by yourself. Even if it is for 30 minutes, unwind and relax with no distractions. Your biology notes will look a lot less confusing by the time you go back to study them.

2. “Get a hobby”

We all have a hidden talent that we always wanted to pursue. Instead of keeping those talents locked away in a shoe box, try getting a hobby and exploring your extra-curricular options around campus. All organizations aren’t academically inclined, so instead of putting all your hard work into Student Senate for example, try joining the new sports club, dance team or any other organization that displays your playful side. We all still have that little kid mentality stuck inside of us so relax and let the games begin!

3. “Party like its 1999… whatever that means”

It’s always important to maintain good studying habits, but not on a Saturday night! Before the week is over, take a look at your planner and see if you have any major assignments due for class. Instead of waiting until the last minute to complete them, get a head start before the weekend hits. By planning ahead, you can still be on top of your work AND have enough free time to wear that new outfit to John Doe’s party the next night.

4. “Eat, Pray, Love”

When having a busy workload, sometimes we can forget the essentials of maintaining our personal lives. Sometimes I forget to eat breakfast or talk to my loved ones at night because I become so overwhelmed with other responsibilities that I overlook the people that matter to me the most. A good way to balance time for your family throughout the week is to send texts or voicemails that emphasize their importance in your life. You may not have time for one of your mom’s two hour long lectures on how to properly clean your room, but sending little messages still lets your family know that you miss them and love them dearly.

College is one of the most exciting times in a young person’s life. For many students, college is the first real taste of independence but with that independence comes a long list of decisions about how to properly spend your time. Your goal as a student should be to find a balance that allows you to do well in school while still experiencing all that college life has to offer outside of the classroom. So relax, put the books down for a second, and enjoy the rest of your college years! You’ll be glad that you did!
