4 DIY Pinterest Halloween Desserts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Anyone who has a Pinterest knows how easy it is to get your hopes up over replicating an amazing looking recipe. Since Halloween is approaching, I wanted to celebrate by making various Halloween themed desserts. After searching and pinning my heart out while thinking, “this one looks fun and easy!”, I picked out 4 different recipes to try. Inspired by Halloween Baking Championship, I turned my kitchen into a baking studio. So, to those who love trying, and mostly failing, to replicate Pinterest recipes, this one’s for you!

1. Mummy Brownies

“This is so cute! This recipe has to be easy!” my eager mind thought. I was so hopeful, so excited. Little did I know this was a recipe for D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R. Nonetheless, I persisted. The number of ingredients was surpassingly low; a box of brownie mix plus eggs, water, oil and chocolate chips, white chocolate melts and candy eyes. After I thought the brownies were cool, I started (more like attempted) to cut perfect squares for my soon to be mummies. LITTLE DID I KNOW that the brownies were in fact not cool. AT ALL. After sorting through the crumbs and damage I created for myself, I was able to salvage around 8 mummies. Now I was frustrated. I made sure to melt the chocolate melts perfectly, and I succeeded! However, when I drizzled on my mummy wraps, the chocolate was way too thin. I was discouraged, and really sad for my mummies. The eyes were really easy to place, but I knew it was too late. These mummies deserved better. I failed them. I rate this recipe an 8/10 for the amount of ingredients and a 4/10 overall. Mostly my fault, but this was a no go for future tries. R.I.P mummies :(

2. Witch Fingers

I was SO excited for this recipe. There was no way I could fail at this one! I’ve been making chocolate covered pretzels for as long as I could remember! My hopes were high, and I knew this was going to work! R.I.P to the mummies, the wicked witch fingers of the west were coming! Again, the amount of ingredients was amazing for a college student, like myself. All I needed was pretzel rods, green chocolate candy melts and shaved almonds. I melted the chocolate in a tall glass cup, making it easier for the dipping! After they were nice and coated, I placed them on a cookie sheet to set. While the chocolate was still warm, I placed a shaved almond on the top and used a fork to create knuckle marks. I placed them in the refrigerator to harden and voila! These creepy treats were done! This recipe gets a 10/10 for ingredients, simplicity and taste!

3. Rice Krispies Pumpkins

This one was a last minute I still have hope try. I thought, “Rice Krispies treats are easy, I can do this!”. Still thinking about the way those mummies turned out, I was trying to remain positive. This recipe called for butter, marshmallows, Rice Krispies, mini pretzel rods, green M&M’s, and orange food dye. Off the bat, ~get it? Halloween terms!~ I rated this a 5/10 for ingredients. Cereal is expensive, so was the food coloring and M&M’s, so making this a money savvy recipe is a no. After I melted the butter and marshmallows, I swirled in yellow and red food dye to get the perfect shade of orange. I then threw in the cereal and stirred until it was all coated and gooey. While still warm, I sprayed my hands with cooking spray and shaped each pumpkin. I set them on a cookie sheet to set, and broke the pretzels to make the stems. I then placed a green M&M for the leaf! After I created all my pumpkins and took a step back to see my work. THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL! My little pumpkin patch was created! I rated this an overall 9/10!

4. Oreo Ghosts?

Okay. This technically was not a Pinterest recipe, I just had a lot of left over white chocolate from those mummies. With no time to waste, I dipped the Oreos in the chocolate and put more candy eyes on them. When I set them down to dry, they left this white trail behind them. While this was a mess, they did look like ghosts! Not the best, but they were a hit! I obviously took the praise and was proud of the turn out! I rated this a 10/10 for number of ingredients and a 7/10 for overall appearance. (I watched a lot of Chopped episodes, if you couldn’t tell).

Have a spook-takular time making your Halloween treats!
