I’ve been very open about the fact that my ex-boyfriend broke up with me just over a month ago. Basically everyone in my life knows about it and had some advice to offer after my first serious relationship ended. Although they meant well with all of the advice, it just made me feel worse. So here are some things I’ve learned along the way that helped me:

1. Don’t fight to be with someone who doesn’t want you be with you.

2. “He is not the sun, you are.” (Thanks Grey’s Anatomy)

3. You couldn’t have saved it if you had tried.

4. Someone who cares about you will support you through anything.

5. Creating something when you are broken helps put you back together.

6. It’s okay to cry for a little bit.

7. The best revenge is success.

8. If you care about someone, you make time for them.

9. Do not set yourself on fire to keep them warm.

10. Loving fiercely is not the problem, not loving enough is the problem.

11. More time to catch up on Netflix!!!

12. You can stop pretending to like shitty EDM music.

13. Removing him from your life means social media too!

14. You think this will break you. It will, but you will rise stronger than before.

15. Someone will love you for all that you are.

16. Focus on loving yourself.

17. Lean on your friends; they’ll help you through it.

18. Forgive yourself for the mistakes you made in the relationship, you weren’t perfect either.

19. It wasn’t you; it was him.

20. Taylor Swift will make you cry but it’s worth it.

21. You’ll cry at weird times, like when you see the place you went on your first date.

Finally,

22. This heartbreak does not define you.
