Joey Maroon ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami chapter.

You may have seen him pull up to campus in his truck, windows down, jamming to country music, but he’d really rather be on the water fishing. Either way, you’ll never see him without a smile: meet Joey Maroon.

Name: “Joey Maroon…or Swagarella because I won the princess pageant two years ago at Camp Kesem”Age: 21Hometown: Miami, FLMajor: Finance with a minor in business lawRelationship Status: Taken

What are you involved in on campus?“Treasurer for Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos (FEC), program coordinator for Camp Kesem, and on the Quidditch Team.”

Favorite spot on campus?“I’d go with the sixth floor of Pavia because it shows everything in Miami.”

What’s the last song you listened to?“It’s definitely a country song…’Beachin’’ by Jake Owen.”

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?“I wanted to be a soccer player cause soccer was my life so I figured I’d play soccer for the USA, but that never happened.”

Tell me about your favorite part of Camp Kesem.“My favorite part about Camp Kesem is that you literally go into camp for a week and hardly know the other counselors and the students that come here. Since you’re there to kind of embarrass yourself and to act funny and stupid, then you just become really close with everybody. So right after camp you’re close friends with all the different counselors there that you didn’t know before. And the impact we have on the kids, gotta throw that in there. My first year going into camp, I thought I was gonna teach the kids something but then I came out and the kids taught me more than I could teach them. And you see how lucky you are to be able to have an impact on their life because you see what they’re going through and you get to let them have fun for that whole week.”

Favorite class/professor?“One of the accountings…if I don’t say Perez he’s going to kick my ass. I’m gonna go with Managerial Accounting with Mario Perez because he took an interest in you if you went to talk to him. He would show up to FEC’s coffee on the rock and if I didn’t tell him about it and he saw me there then he’d get upset that I hadn’t told him.”

If you could be anyone for a day, who would you be?“Hmmm…I would want to be Hugh Jackman.”

What has been the best experience you’ve had at UM so far?“Participating in homecoming with FEC last year and dancing at OCheer as Sulley from ‘Monsters Inc.’ I had the tail on and everything.”

What would you do for a Klondike bar?“I’d booty dance in a crowd for a Klondike bar.”

If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?“The ‘90s when I was a kid cause cartoons were better, music was better and telephones really weren’t a big thing.”

What is your dream date?“Dream date would be…something on the water, all right so dinner on a private sailboat in between Stiltsville so you can see the skyline of Miami and Brickell, and then go back for a drive in movie after that.”

Christina is an accounting major at the University of Miami. You can typically find her eating flourless chocolate cake at Books & Books while stressing over school with friends. Her go to pick-me-ups are Cuban food and country music, and she hopes to one day have her own greetings card shop.
