Why You Need to Start Watching Riverdale

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

After hearing that Riverdale is similar to Gossip Girl, I was interested. After finishing the first episode, I was hooked. 48 hours later, I had finished the series – it is that addictive. The show has everything. It not only tells the story of a local murder, but a variety of stories within the big story.

Throughout the entire series, you have no idea who to trust. Just when you think you caught the murderer, you find another suspect with just as much evidence to assume they are the murderer. With this trust issue, you love-hate all of the characters. For example, Archie Andrews. He is a hottie, but he tries to fix every situation. Not to mention was where Jason Blossom first went missing the morning he went missing. With his music teacher. Hooking up. Sketchy, abnormal, and illegal? Yes. Hooked yet? Yes.

You love-hate Cheryl, Jason Blossom’s sister. You love her because you could not imagine being in her position. However, there are reasons to suspect she murdered her brother. She was with him the moment he disappeared and lied in her original witness statement. What was the plan Cheryl? However, she talks constantly about the love for her brother by saying: “I love my brother more than I love myself.” Being that she is the “Queen Bee” of Riverdale High, she must have really loved her brother. Not to mention, she is constantly reminding the town that Jason Blossom is dead and she is mourning.

Next, you love-hate Jughead Jones. He is a hottie, just like Archie and has come from a rough upbringing. He is also looking deeply into the murder investigation and being such a good friend ;) to Betty. Wait… you just love Juggie. Nevermind.

You do, however, love-hate Betty. She desires to not have a perfect reputation and wishes to be more rebellious. But, her tight, high ponytail is annoying and does not make her case to be more rebellious convincing. She also gets too emotional about her friends/family and goes too far with her investigating.

Next is Betty’s sidekick, Veronica. She is gorgeous, genuine, and a good friend (for the most part) to Betty. Her dad also is locked up in jail for embezzling money. Thus, we love her. BUT, how does she wear high heels, pearls, and a dress to class EVERYDAY? How does she have the time to look that put together?

Last but not least, Kevin. He is portrayed as the stereotypical GBF, but adds so much to the murder mystery plot. He found Jason Blossom’s dead body while trying to hook-up with a classmate. I am sorry, if he did not find the body, how would there even be a story?

So… you should watch this show because every episode gives you a new reason to love-hate one of the many wonderful, stupid, and iconic characters.
