Why Being Single In College Is Awesome

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

If a wine night filled with gossip and your girlfriends can’t get you through a cold winter night, nothing can. Any girl who has ever been to wine night, however, knows that most of the conversations are dominated by one thing and one thing only: boys — boys their dating, hooking up with, crushing on or currently hatin’ on. The only problem is there’s always that one girl in the group who will inevitably complain for a minimum of 30 minutes about how she’s still single and going to die alone as a cat lady, and that no one loves her because she hasn’t locked down her Miami Merger yet (please, don’t let this be you). But being single is actually pretty great and Her Campus came up with 8 reasons why being single in college is awesome!

1. No shaving. We’re huge Venus Embrace fanatics, but if you want to skip a few days of trimming the hair off your body, go for it. Do you. The only person definitely touching your legs that night is you.

2.  You don’t have to worry about balancing friends with significant others. If anyone asks, you’re single because your friends love you too much to share. Works every time.

3. No need to plan around anyone else.So your boyfriend’s mom is coming into town at 6 p.m. and you have that wine night we were talking about at 6:30 p.m., so looks like you’ll have to work out a compromise with your boyfriend or your friends. If you’re single, looks like you’re getting to wine night right on time! #cheers

4. You won’t deal with the potential heartbreak of a breakup. So if you’re like us, your younger sisters friends might insist that you follow them all on Instagram, but recently one of them posted this quote that reads, “You’re either going to end up marrying the person you’re dating or breaking up with them.” Ignoring the fact that these girls are 12, this little phrase does have some truth to it. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but if it doesn’t feel like love, you might not get a happy ending and the best protector of your heart is yourself.

5. You never have to have awkward “meet the parents” shenanigans. There’s something about shaking sweaty palms with an older looking version of your boyfriend and his overly excited mother that isn’t all that appealing. Let’s be real though, most parents are great! If they raised your BF, they have to have something good about them. But meeting the parents can be nerveracking and sometimes awkward.

6. You don’t have an obligation to act a certain way.Flirt with who you want! If you want to go out at night and act like 2007 Britney Spears or stay in an act like a 1950s housewife, be our guest. The only people asking about your night the next morning are the girls you went out with, and let’s be honest, they’ve all been 2007 Britney before.

7. You don’t have to worry about making sure someone else is happy. At the end of the day, you are all you’re promised to have. As morbid as that sounds, it’s true. Being single means you get to do what makes you happy and you get to enjoy it, too. Your 20s are a time to be selfish and give yourself the time you need to figure what makes you happy. Take advantage of it.

8. You’ll learn how to love yourself for being just yourself. The saddest thing in the world is a girl who can’t love herself unless someone else is saying it to her every day. Learning to love yourself for who you are is absolutely vital to living the good life.
