Super Bowl Commercial Hits and Misses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

While Super Bowl Sunday is all about the rivalry between the teams at stake, there is just as much hype around what commercials are being aired.

The Snickers commercial featuring Betty White: HIT!
In this commercial, Betty White is featured amongst a plethora of football men and she is tackled to the ground (poor lil’ lady)! After this happens, the guys insinuate she should step up her game and that she is ironically so, playing like Betty White out on the field. Betty White rebuttals with, “that’s not what your girlfriend said.” The tagline was “You’re not you when you’re hungry. Snickers satisfies.” This commercial, if I do say so myself, is definitely worth Youtubing for a good laugh, which Betty White never fails to provide.  This commercial is proof that comedic violence never flops during the Super Bowl.

The Letterman ad: MISS
This was just another advertisement for his show. It featured Oprah Winfrey and Jay Leno. The clip commences with Letterman saying, “this is the worst Super bowl party ever.” Leno then says, “He’s just saying that because I’m here”, leaving Oprah to be the mediator.

“Sexy and I Know It” M&M’s: IFFY

This was the one where the lady M&M was accused of going to the party “naked” because of he brown shell. Just as she insists that is a childish assumption the classic red M&M shows up and strips of his red shell. I’ve seen mixed reviews out on this one. It may have been a silly concept, but it made people laugh.

Bud Light Platinum: HIT!
This typical party-scene beer commercial was taken to the next level with an Avicii soundtrack — no pun intended.

Despite these commercials gaining recognition, as a whole, consensus was that the commercials this year were less than stellar. An example of a failed effort was Taco Bell (which I am sad to call out since I am a big endorser of the Cheesy Gordita). In comparison to years past, the Super Bowl commercials this year definitely as a whole took a turn for the worse. A reason for this may be the fact that we are still facing a recession, and advertisers are pinching the pennies.

Where will the ads be next year? Viewers can only hope that Taco Bell amongst other companies such as Anheuser-Busch (who are usually the king of Super Bowl advertising) hit the drawing room earlier next year! If we take one thing away from the commercials this year it was that Denny’s will offer everyone free Grand Slam breakfasts on Tuesday from 6 am to 2 pm, and on your birthday throughout 2012. Totally wish there was a Denny’s in the Oxbox!
