How to De-stress in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

College can be an extremely stressful time – especially second semesters. It’s important to not only take care of yourself physically but mentally as well. Taking care of yourself can be anything that makes you feel good, from face masks to working out to having a detailed planner. Here are some of my favorite ways to relax when life gets to be too much!

Essential Oils

My roommate and I have an essential oils diffuser that we love to turn on when we’re feeling stressed or anxious. It gives the room a calm vibe which instantly makes us feel better. I use the sparoom small diffuser! It’s perfectly sized and not too expensive, either.

Planner

Having a planner in college is imperative in my opinion. I love to write everything out for the upcoming week ahead of time so I know what my schedule will look like. It makes me so much less stressed to have all of my assignments written down because that way I know I’m not forgetting anything. My favorite are the Lilly Pulitzer planners, but there’s so many options for a cute, functional planner!

Working Out

While it can be stressful to find time to work out, it’s definitely worth it. It’s not new information that working out is a good stress reliever, but it really does make me feel so much better. Not only I am more relaxed after, but it helps me take care of myself physically, too.

Reading/Watching Netflix

Sometimes the best stress reliever is doing almost nothing at all. When I’m really stressed out it’s nice to do something that doesn’t really require me to think, like reading or watching Netflix. If you’re looking for some extra motivation, I recommend “You Are A Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero. If you want to feel extra ~zen~ drink some green tea while you’re at it.

It’s so important to take care of your mental health, especially in an environment as stressful as college. While these tips may only be surface level, it’s important to recognize when life is getting to be too much and take steps to help yourself as early as possible.
