The Different Kinds Sweaters That You Should Rock This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Sweaters and fall are like peanut butter and jelly… it’s a no brainer. However, not all sweaters are created equal. The word “sweater” opens up a category of all different kinds of garments that can fill your fall (and winter) wardrobe. As a sweater enthusiast (literally, I wear a sweater and leggings every day from mid-October until late March), I’m here to introduce you to all the different style sweaters you should be looking out for this fall.

The Relaxed Cardigan

Over-sized open cardigans are the perfect accessory to carry throughout fall- especially as the weather begins to change and you aren’t sure what the temperature will be. They can be used to dress up or dress down any outfit and will keep you cozy throughout the day. Throw it over a t-shirt or pair it with a dress to make your look comfortable and fall appropriate

The Poncho Sweater

A variation on the cardigan, the poncho sweater is like wearing a blanket around you all day. This season especially, ponchos are making a comeback and you can find them all over the shelves. Again, you can throw it over almost any outfit to fall it up. They come in so many different fall colors and patterns that make it a stylish statement piece.

The Off the Shoulder

Off the shoulder shirts are super ~trendy~ right now, and it’s expanded over to sweaters. This sweater looks both sophisticated and flirty and its perfect for a colder night out.  Currently, you can find this trend at almost any of your favorite stores, so grab them while you can!

The Turtle Neck

Don’t worry, these aren’t the turtlenecks you wore in kindergarten. The turtle neck sweater with an oversized neck is the perfect every day fall sweater. A go-to cute-to-class look, this sweater makes you look very fashionable, when in reality you really are just wearing it because it’s the most comfortable thing you own.

The Cropped Sweater

Crop tops don’t only have to be for summer! Paired with high waisted jeans, take your favorite going-out look from summer to fall. This is perfect for earlier fall days when it’s too chilly to wear the regular tanks and crop tops, but you’re not ready to give into winter yet.

The Sweater Dress

Put away those summer dresses for the season! The sweater dress is a great alternative to still look cute while staying warm during fall. Pair it with tights, boots, and a jacket for a perfect put-together fall or winter look. You can wear this outfit to class, going out, a family dinner or really any occasion depending on how you style it. Plus, you get to skip pants all together, making them probably the comfiest sweater of them all.

The Funky Sleeved Sweater

Sweaters with funky sleeves are all the rage this fall. This allows you to show some style and spruce of your look. They have all different kinds of sleeve variations, so anyone can find one that goes with their personal style. The one pictured above has a braided sleeve which gives it some texture and turns a plain sweater into a fun statement piece!

The Cable Knit Sweater

Whether you buy it from a store or your grandmother hand knits it for you, cable knit sweaters are a timeless essential. When I think of a cable knit sweater I picture cozying up next to a fire with pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. Grab it in every color you can find, because this sweater is never going out of style.

The Backless Sweater

I will admit this is a bit on an oxymoron. The functionality of it may be hard (you probably don’t want a bare back when it’s cold enough that you need a sweater), but the aesthetic is too cute to pass it up. Pair it with a cute bralette for a fun and flirty look that’s perfect for a night out.

The Distressed Sweater

Who said the distressed look is just for jeans? The distressed sweater gives you an edgy look that is super cute in the fall. There are so many different variations of this kind of sweater so find one that best suits your aesthetic. One piece of advice though- save the scissors for the jeans and don’t try to cut up a sweater of your own.
