See You Later Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MCLA chapter.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”- Lao Izu

For the majority of summer 2017, I was eager– eager to take the first of many big steps in my life. I walked across the stage at graduation with another four year plan. A plan to go to college for psychology and behavior analysis but really, there was no further plan. I knew what I wanted to major in, but I was yet to know who I was or the challenges I was about to face.

I spent the hot summer days hanging out with friends and soaking up the sun. All of us were eager to embark on our journey of greatness. We wanted to jump right into college but the sadness struck when the reality came in.We weren’t going to see each other everyday anymore and we were leaving everything we knew behind. Ah, the sweetness of growing up: change. Summer was flying passed us, but then it hit August and the pace came to a halt. The nights became longer and the “see you laters” began.

The first semester of college was weird. Getting into the routine of things was easy, however, the course load was a different story. In high school, studying just meant looking over notes and calling it a night, but in college it was a whole new world… at least during that first semester. The study sessions felt never-ending as we sat in the library or the Greylock room for hours on end, ordering food so we wouldn’t have to take a break to go to the dinning hall. The motivation and effort was all too real.

Now, as I finish us my last final of my freshman year, I look back at the first semester and appreciate the growth and changes that have taken place. Sure, I’m still a psychology major but now with a double minor of English and creative writing. My roommate has left and my room was transformed into a premium single, with a king size bed, my friends have expanded, and my motivation has decreased. My grades have improved even though my motivation has decreased and my procrastination has decreased.

As I say “see you later” to some of the greatest friends I have ever met, I know I am going to miss them. I now have to adjust to not seeing them everyday and only having to go down two floors whenever I want to see them, but I’m beyond excited to say “welcome home” to the friends I said “see you later” too in the summer of 2017.
