The best Rom-Coms for all Non-Romers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MCLA chapter.

For someone whose favorite genre is horror, you may find it surprising that some of my absolute favorite movies are romantic comedies. I have complied a list of the best Rom-Coms for those who don’t like Rom-Coms, so if you are like me and don’t mind watching one now and then, but definitely don’t want to watch two characters be all “swoon-y” over each other, then you may find the following helpful the next time your friends want to have movie night.

10.) Hitch (2005)

Will Smith plays the professional “date doctor” who, while helping his latest client win over the woman of his dreams, discovers that his game doesn’t work that well when it comes to a gossip columnist he grows smitten with. Plus, who knew an allergic reaction could be so funny?

9.) Bridesmaids (2012)

Staring Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, this movie will have you dying of laughter between Wiig being drunk on a plane, destroying a chocolate fountain, and the gang getting explosive food poisoning at a bridal dress fitting.

8.) American Pie (1999)

Four friends make a pack to lose their virginity by prom night, but as to be expected there are some hiccups along the way. Oh, yeah, and this one time at band camp…

7.) My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

When a Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek man, she struggles to get her big Greek family to accept him while she comes to accept her culture. No matter what, just remember to put some Windex on it.

6.) Easy A (2010)

It’s a modern adaptation of “The Scarlet Letter” starring Emma Stone who plays a teenager who uses the high school rumor mill to advance her’s and other’s social statues while making a lot of 80’s references.

5.) Clueless (1995)

Alicia Silverstone plays the lovable but spoiled Cher who takes it upon herself to set up her teachers and make over the new student while figuring out her own love life. This smart and equally as hysterical movie will leave everyone saying “as if”.

4.) Princess Bride (1987)

A postmodern fairytale that isn’t all about kissing but adventure, bravery, revenge, torture, and miracles. It’s got a little something for everyone.

3.) 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Dreamy Heath Ledger and cutie Joseph Gordon-Levitt work together to steal the hearts of the strong and sensational Stratford sisters in this 1990’s quintessential Rom-Com adaptation of the “Taming of the Shrew”.

2.) Harold and Maude (1971)

If you’re looking for a not-your-typical-Rom-Com then this is probably your best bet. It follows a young man who is obsessed with death whose life is changed by a much older woman that he meets at a funeral.

1.)  When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This is a prime example of how crucial good dialogue can be for a movie. Harry and Sally’s conversations throughout the film is what pushes it and makes it relevant for viewers. Their vastly different views on love, sex, and relationships results in amusing banter that everyone will enjoy.
