Wanderlust Worthy: Underrated European Destinations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

If you’re currently studying abroad in Europe, getting ahead on planning an epic spring break with your friends, or pretending summer is just around the corner again, look no further for your latest travel inspiration. Having had the privilege of studying abroad for a semester in France, I travelled more in five months than I had in my entire life. Along the way, I discovered amazing cities ‘off the beaten path’ that absolutely should not be missed. So if you’re looking to branch off from big cities like London and Rome, read on to find out my favourite hidden travel destinations.

  • If you’re a budding photographer: Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is quickly becoming a hotspot for celebrities and travel bloggers alike. Celebrities including Justin Bieber, the Kardashians, Emma Watson and more have travelled to and raved about the country. I spent just over a week in Reykjavik, and our days were booked with snorkeling in the Silfra Fissure, ATVing on lava beaches and hiking up Mount Esja, among various other outdoor activities. With beautiful, untouched scenery everywhere you go, Iceland is truly a photographer’s heaven. Don’t forget to check out Blue Lagoon – a geothermal spa that features stunning arctic blue water, facial cleansing mud masks and a swim-up bar.

  • If you’re looking for a scenic getaway by the water: Lake Como, Italy

Just an hour and a half north of Milan, you’ll find Lake Como, the third-largest lake in Italy. Dotted along the lake are small towns that are connected conveniently by a ferry. During our day-trip to Lake Como, we visited Varenna and Bellagio where we sampled fresh pasta and gelato while wandering through each town. While you’re there, keep your eyes on the lookout for George Clooney, who reportedly owns a villa along the lake!

  • If you’re scouting out royal castles and estates: Sintra, Portugal

(Above: Pena National Palace in Sintra)

Take a deep-dive into Portuguese history by visiting the town of Sintra. An easy day-trip to take from Lisbon, Sintra is filled with castles, palaces and other architectural remnants of Portuguese royalty. Popular landmarks including Pena National Palace and the Castle of the Moors are connected by a cheap and timely bus system. If you have an extra day to spend, check out Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of contintental Europe that features sweeping views of the ocean.

  • If you’re looking for a charming, medieval town: York, England

(Above: York Castle, also known as Clifford’s Tower)

While visiting a friend in Leeds, we decided to take a day-trip to York, widely considered one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world. The town is surrounded by a still-standing city wall which includes a pathway you can use to walk along the town’s perimeter. Visit the York Minister, an elaborate gothic Cathedral that is sure to take your breath away. Afterwards, make your way to the top of York Castle for great views of the town below.

There you have it – some of my favourite hidden treasures from my time in Europe. What destinations are on your dream travel list?
