Shameless winter pampering

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

With the cold winter months, come harsh winds and dry weather. As a consequence, the moisture in the air disappears and our skin is left lifeless. Same goes for our hair!

When you think of summer, you think of beachy waves and a healthy glow. However, come winter, that glow turns into an ashy shadow and the light no longer reflects from our locks.

It may seem inevitable but, with certain additions to your routine, you can make your way to a more radiant complexion and satin hair! And, let’s be real, with so many snowstorms, a girl’s got to find a way to efficiently spend her time at home right?

Now, pampering yourself may seem time-consuming and expensive and it certainly can be… But it’s not always the case! Here are a few inexpensive masks and scrubs that you can quickly whisk in your own kitchen to give yourself a little bit of oomph!

Sugar Scrub

Exfoliating is crucial in winter. Dry flaky skin is a common problem so using a gentle scrub 3 times a week will help get rid of dead skin cells and encourage cell regeneration. It’ll also help masks and moisturizers properly absorb into your skin.
Sugar can be paired up with many different ingredients to make an effective scrub, as long as the ingredients provide moisturize!

Here are some options:

1 part sugar, 1 part honey or,
1 part sugar, 1 part olive oil or,
1 part sugar, 1 part coconut oil

Yogurt Mask

It brightens the skin, reduces redness, fades scars, tightens pores, treats blemishes, hydrates, treats irritated skin, the list goes on. This mask is great for people with sensitive and dehydrated skin but anyone else can benefit from it. If you have particularly acne-prone skin, add some oatmeal and honey; they help treat acne! Apply a thick layer and wait till it dries, then rinse off the mask and pat your skin dry.

Proportions:

1 spoon of yogurt (the thicker, the more moisturizing)
1 spoon of oatmeal (optional)
1 spoon of honey (optional)

Coconut hair mask

Not only does it smell amazing but it also hydrates! And you only need one ingredient: coconut oil. You just need to take some coconut oil, rub it around in your hands for a few seconds to get it more malleable, then rub it all over your dry hair. Then, wrap your hair in a shower cap or an old shirt (this is great for curly hair) and leave it on for as long as possible! You can even go to sleep with it on. Health will be gleaming out of your hair!

Ps. If you don’t like the smell of coconut, fear not: the smell does not linger after washing!

Add these to your beauty routine, and looking good in winter will be a breeze!
