Knock, Knock. Who’s there? Candy! An Interview with Aaron Kerr, Owner of Project Candy Box

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

As if we thought candy couldn’t get any better, we can now get it delivered right to our doorsteps each month. I had the pleasure of speaking with Aaron Kerr, the brains behind the candy operation. Though he started the business in Calgary, Kerr is a Montrealer at heart; he finished his marketing degree at Concordia in 2011. Being an entrepreneur is a side job, Aaron tells me, and he is always trying to develop new and unique business opportunities. To get those creative juices flowing he likes to sit down with friends for coffee, beer or better yet, candy.

“I’m always trying to outdo myself, but this one’s truly my baby,” Aaron says of  Project Candy Box. How the company works, he explains, is by signing up for a month-by-month delivery. Once the website is up and running, there will be monthly options for three months, six months, or yearly. The idea behind this delivery system is to brighten someone’s day with the arrival of sweet treats that can include virtually any candy you crave and even a few surprises, like jokes and stickers, to really make you smile.

“Who doesn’t love to open up the door and get surprised by a big box of candy? Its meant to be a surprise and an experience,” says Aaron, and we cannot argue with that one bit.

Aaron says the prices are flexible and negotiable, witht an average price of $20 per month. He really wishes to “offer a very cost-effective product that everyone can buy.” Everyone in Canada that is – he only ships within the country, making Candy Box an exclusive Canadian product.

“Candy is purely subjective” claims Aaron. “Not everyone is going to like everything in our boxes, the surprise is what’s key. And if you don’t like one of our candies, share it with a friend!” He’s all about making the product delicious and social. “I am that kid in the candy store,” Aaron says when I ask about his ideal Candy Box creation. “This is one of the hardest questions for me to answer.” But we expected nothing else from a candy fanatic. “What I like in terms of chocolate is a crunchie – I love that sponge toffee. I also love to be challenged by sour candies – I’m a huge fan of warheads. But just recently I’ve discovered these sour balls that put warheads to shame! If I was to include that in my box I would have to include a warning about how sour these guys are.”

Project Candy Box will have some partnerships with wholesalers and some directly with factories and manufacturers.

“I can’t say who, but we have partnered with a company that makes candy and has launched an award-winning product which will be included in the box.”

The launch of the official bilingual website will shortly be upon us, so keep your ears and eyes peeled. The startup orders have already reached up to 170 sales of boxes all over Canada, showing us just how popular this company will be and how excited we are to satisfy our taste buds each month.

“You’d be so surprised to see who signs up for the candy boxes, it could be a 15-year-old or an 80-year-old and everything in between,” Aaron tells me, making it hard to put a specific demographic on who will be interested in buying the candy boxes. Everyone is interested in getting candy boxes delivered to their doorsteps each month – literally!
