Fun Things To Do In Montreal This Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

It’s already snowing outside and winter is just around the corner. If you’re like me and you hate winter, you might be feeling a little depressed at the thought of the cold, dark days ahead, but I’m here to tell you that winter doesn’t have to be boring! Here are some fun things to do if you’re staying in Montreal this winter break:

  • Take Instagram Worthy Pictures at Montreal’s Christmas Market

The Grand Marché de Noël is a Christmas market that transforms the Place des Arts Esplanade into a winter wonderland during the month of December. The market features boutiques where you can find unique gifts, as well as food trucks and wine bars that offer cocktails, waffles and even cotton candy. You’ll also find a festive Santa Claus Christmas village that will surely get you in the holiday spirit!

  • Visit A Museum

When it’s -25C outside, you probably won’t feel like doing anything outdoors. If you still want to get out the house, but don’t want to freeze, you can visit one of Montreal’s many museums. Winter break is the perfect time to spend a day admiring art exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Musée d’art Contemporain. You can also check out the history exhibitions at Pointe-à-Callière, learn more about astronomy at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium or see hundreds of different species of plants and animals at the Biodome.

  • Try Snowshoeing on Mount Royal

Mount Royal is scenic every season, but it is especially breathtaking during winter when the mountain is covered in snow. The park offers snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice skating and even snow tubing, proving that you don’t have to leave the heart of the city to enjoy a variety of outdoor winter activities. If you want to take a break from your day of fun, you can enjoy a meal and warm up at the Pavilion or Smith House Café des Amis nearby.

  • Visit the Old Port

Montreal’s historic Old Port offers some great winter activities along picturesque sceneries. Starting December 10th, head out to the city’s most popular outdoor ice skating rink! The Bonsecours Basin rink plays great music that you can skate and twirl to, while admiring the festive decorations and twinkling lights. Don’t own ice skates? No problem: skates and lockers are available to rent on site!

In addition, the Old Port is also hosting Montreal’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration with live music and – of course – fireworks!

You can also look forward to Igloofest, an outdoor eletronic music festival in January that attracts thousands of people every year.

For more information about all the fun stuff to do in Old Port, check out the website.

As long as you take advantage of the many activities the city has to offer, you will never get bored this holiday break!
