Food Break: Mon Ami at Your Service

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

The dreadful finals season has arrived but nothing – not even finals – should ever stand in the way of delicious, greasy, savoury food. But I’m sure a smart McGill student like yourself already knew that and clicked on the mouth-watering picture of fried chicken in this article to find out where to treat yourself to some. Luckily for you, Mon Ami, located at 2081 Rue Sainte-Catherine, is just a few metro stops or a short 20 min walk away from campus. Mon Ami is a Korean restaurant with chains around Montreal to conveniently serve you regardless of where you are. Each chain has a different specialty concerning fried chicken, Korean BBQ and express food: so check out their website to find the perfect selection.

If you are accustomed to the cheap, dry, small portioned fried chicken from KFC, Poulet Bronze, or St. Hubert, boy are you going to be blown away by Korean fried chicken! Mon Ami’s chicken gets as close as possible to the Korean fried chicken experience, with its never ending crunchiness on the outside that makes an amazing sound when you bite into a piece and the softest meat on the inside that will melt in your mouth. (That has never happend to me with KFC or St-Hubert chicken). And if you aren’t such a big fan of chicken, there are also other delish options of Korean BBQ and other Korean dishes that range from stews, to noodles, to rice plates with vegetarian options.

Like this Bulgogi dish!

Many of you will also be surprised by the different selections of fried chicken on the menu from boneless, to sweet and spicy, to soy sauce with garlic, etc. I would recommend going with bones; holding those crispy hot drumsticks in your hands and getting your fingers all greasy is just part of the experience. There is also the choice of getting a 1-person portion, which basically means half of a whole chicken, or a 2-to-3-person portion, which is a bucket of one whole chicken. (P.S. A friend and I finished a bucket all on our own, but on the brink of food death – just to give you an idea).

Plus, if you are the type of person who takes the ambience of a restaurant very seriously and believes it should go harmoniously with the food, I guarantee you that the modern interior of the restaurant, paired with Korean traditional decorations and the catchy K-pop music in the background, makes the whole chicken and Korean food session even better (if that’s possible).

At the end of the lunch or dinner, you will be full and content with the delicious food you just had, as well as by the moderate bill. The prices as seen on the menu above are very fairly priced and student friendly for the amount of food you get, leaving you with leftovers to bring back home (unlike me). I have personally been going going to Mon Ami weekly since I have discovered the restaurant last month, and I bet you guys are going to be joining me very soon.

Good luck on your finals, and have a wonderful break!
