Dry Lips No More: Five Balms and Treatments to Try This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

It is officially dry lips season in Montreal. Between the freezing temperatures outside and the drying heat inside, there is no escape for the most delicate body part. I’ve rounded up five lip balms and treatments, from new releases to old favourites, that will take your lips from chapped and flaky to smooth and kissable (gotta be prepared for New Year’s, right?). These lip products range from budget-friendly to kind-of-pricey-for-a-lip balm, so there is something to try at every price point. They also make a great last-minute gift that anyone would appreciate.

1. Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm

The Baby Lips in Cherry Me has been one of my favorite lip balms since high school. The red tint and cherry popsicle scent are a step up from the classic Cherry Chapstick, and it can be found in any drugstore. This lip balm is perfect for anyone looking for a tinted lip option without breaking the bank. It may not permanently fix your chapped lips, but it is a nice daytime option for soothing dry lips with a little bit of added color.

2. Eos Crystal Lip Balm

One of Eos’s newest releases, the Crystal Lip Balm is made with nourishing oils instead of wax, giving it a unique clear dome instead of the usual opaque white. This balm comes in two scents, Vanilla Orchid, and Hibiscus Peach. I have tried the Hibiscus Peach one and it smells like summer which is nice for this time of year when snow is almost always covering the ground. Eos lip balms can also be found at any drugstore and make easy and affordable stocking stuffers.

3. Glossier Balm Dotcom in Birthday Glossier’s Balm Dotcoms have a cult following, and for good reason. The thick balms are great for protecting your lips when venturing out in the cold. They have several flavors of Balm Dotcom (can we talk about that name by the way?), my personal favorite being “Birthday”. This flavor was inspired by Milk Bar’s famous Birthday Cake, and it smells incredible. This balm is also great for the holiday season since it contains a hint of glitter which can add a festive touch to any lip look when used as a topper.

4. LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask

This new lip mask from LANEIGE is meant to transform your lips while you sleep so you can wake up in the morning with the perfect base for any lipstick or gloss. The berry scent is wonderful and a little goes a long way to fix flaky lips. The rave reviews on Sephora are a testament to how good this product really is. If you’re also experiencing dry skin, you can buy a duo set featuring a sample sized lip mask and Water Sleeping Face Mask, so you can wake up every day with moisturized skin and lips.

5. Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment

This was the first high-end lip product I ever tried, and I haven’t turned back since. The Sugar Lip Treatments can heal even the driest of lips, and have a lovely, thick formula with a delicious lemon scent. They also contain SPF 15, which is necessary even in the colder months. The Lip Treatments come in over 10 shades, varying from bright pink to deep berry, some with a shimmer finish for an added bit of glam. During the holiday season, Fresh also offers gift sets with mini versions of the Sugar Lip Treatment so you can try all of the shades you have been eyeing. Even though these balms are a little pricey, they are worth every cent
