Dr. Style: 5 Tips for a New Year and New You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

From “athleisure” to the metallic flash tattoo, 2015 brought a whirlwind of trends… some of which I’m happy to see go. Pastel hair (not sure if that’s still a thing) I’m hoping will fade into history, just like it does when not washed with the right shampoo. 2016 hopefully will be a year for fresh beginnings and new trends, so get ready y’all! I can’t wait to see what the year brings us. To get ready, I’ve prepared 5 helpful tips to jump start your year on the track to fabulousness.

1.  Put those summer clothes away

I know I’m horrible at this. It’s finally time to shove your tank tops to the back of your closet because guess what? You’re barely going to wear them. Save some space for sweaters and scarves. If you need a little extra $cha-ching$, then sell any clothes you don’t need on the Facebook group McGill Clothing Exchange. If you need last minute winter attire, there are plenty of cheaper options listed in the group ready for purchasing.

2. Update your makeup

Clean your brushes, throw out that 3 year-old mascara, or put all your lipsticks in one place. The organization will probably take no more than 20 minutes, and will save future you from some real headaches. Moreover, if you’ve gotten pale since summer, do not (I REPEAT, DO NOT) continue using the same color foundation for winter! It just looks wrong. Buy a lighter color that compliments the rest of your body. If your skin is feeling flakier due to the dry air, invest in more heavy duty lotions.

3. Put your holiday gifts to good use

It’s always better to use up your holiday gifts now before you forget they exist. That lotion kit from Bath and Body Works Aunt Judy gave you is ah-mazing (and smells delicious), so why not?! If a relative gifted you with a not-so-cute sweater, then make it work! Get creative, and pair it with some dark denim and cute boots. Just remember that Christmas only comes once a year, so make it worth while.

4. Care for your sweaters properly

Washing and storing sweaters during the winter is actually a pretty difficult task. This Madewell article provides some helpful tricks for keeping your sweaters the same way as when you first bought them. Wash sweaters after every 4 wears unless you spill, sweat, or smoke. Hand washing sweaters in cold water, and then soaking it for 30 minutes is the most effective way to clean them.

5. Be confident no matter what!

As always, the best accessory is confidence. It doesn’t really matter what you put on your body as long as you werk werk werk! As we ring in the New Year, and I know it’s cliché, start fresh. It’s another chance to follow your dreams, and make them happen. New Year’s resolutions are always tough, but trying never hurt.

I hope these tips have been helpful to all you fashionistas out there! Tune in biweekly for more Dr. Style articles answering any style and beauty questions.

Stay healthy. Stay gorgeous.
