When I first moved to Montreal I thought I would never fall victim to the hipster craze. I was always too mainstream for that. Well, I was very wrong. After reflecting on my lifestyle habits recently, I have come to the conclusion that I am none other than a hipster. Here are the five ways I discovered I was a hipster.

1.      I always drink out of mason jars. At first, I started doing this because I had no clean dishes. Then I bought mason jar shot glasses out of pure irony. Then I bought mason jars with handles because they were on sale. Finally I admitted I have an obsession. Water, milk, coffee, beer, it doesn’t matter to me as long as I can drink it out of a mason jar.

2.      I am addicted to thrifting. When this first became a weekly thing, I blamed it on my small student budget. But then it became exciting to try and find the best deals. Then I realized that I could find similar clothes to what my friends were wearing, except for much cheaper. Plus, worn in flannels are the comfiest things for midterm season. To this day I’ve never looked back.

3.      I am also addicted to Urban Outfitters. This is the only place that I will still splurge at. Even though there things are overpriced, everything is so effortlessly cool that I simply can’t resist. Plus they always have the best selection of mason jar-related housewares.

4.      I can only study in small coffee shops, never the library or Starbucks. The larger the study space, the more uncomfortable I get. I really can’t stand to be in populated areas when I need to tackle my political science homework. Give me a black, bitter tasting coffee at Humble Lion and I will be forever grateful.

5.      I only listen to music on vinyl. In my opinion this is the true, authentic way to listen to music. I never really cared about how I listened to music until I bought a vintage record player while thrifting (obviously). Not only is vinyl the best way to listen to music, but they make great wall decoration.

The mason jar obsession aside, being a hipster is actually not as terrible as I thought it would be. I have great taste in clothes, great taste in study spaces, and great taste in music. Plus I will always know about unknown bands before you do. But whatever label you might identify with, keep doing you because that is AWESOME.
