21 Things That Always Happen During Back-To-School Season at McGill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Back-to-school season at McGill brings with it many familiar sights. From OAP to the influx of new freshmen, here are twenty-two things you’re bound to see on campus at the start of a new school year.

1. You get lost in the McGill bookstore.

You can’t find the right textbook or the exit.

2. You internally cry when you study at McLennan for the first time this semester.

You have so many bad memories at this library.

3. You get offended when you’re mistaken for a first year.

The McGill lanyard around your neck isn’t helping the problem.

4. You put way too much effort into uploading your photos from OAP.

But that’s just because it’s the best place on Earth.

5. You spend all your rent money on textbooks.

Asking mom and dad for more money is the worst.

6. Yet still find a way to buy ridiculous amounts of beer.

But you swear you don’t have a problem with alcohol.

7. You survive without Internet because it hasn’t been installed in your new apartment.

You couldn’t imagine living before the age of wifi.

8. You get jealous of all the froshies doing their thing.

Even if you’re a frosh leader, it’s not the same as being a froshie for the first time.

8. You party at a typical McGill club at least once, like Tokyo or New City Gas.

And you have no shame.

9. You struggle to make an appointment with an advisor.

Making an appointment with an advisor is like trying to catch a rare Pokémon.

10. You have to change your entire schedule because you don’t have the prerequisites for one class.

Then why’d you let me register for it, Minerva?!

11. You start grabbing a coffee from Tim Hortons every morning.

Tim Hortons is and always will be bae.

12. You skip the first week of classes and totally feel guilty about it.

But then you remember that syllabus week isn’t too important.

13. You spend the majority of your time on Lower Field.

You’ve got to enjoy that sunshine before the snow ruins everything.

14. You don’t consider school to have begun until after Add/ Drop.

Because that’s when teachers can start assigning things. Game on.

15. You scare new students by telling them how terrible winter is.

It’s way too much fun to watch their reactions.

16. You start relying on Chef on Call and McGill Pizza way too much.

You still haven’t mastered the art of cooking for yourself.

17. You complain about how bad construction is in Montreal.

There are detours and roadblocks on every other street.

18. And you spend way too much time avoiding walking on Sherbrooke.

Unless you like being 20 minutes late to class, that is.

19. You begrudgingly walk about Mount Royal and find the best view.

The best part is it’s totally Instagram worthy.

20. You reminisce about all your memories of back-to-school seasons past.

Ah, the memories.

21. You and your friends agree that the years are going by way too fast.

Can’t we just redo this whole McGill thing?

There are things about McGill that never seem to change- and we’re totally happy about that! Back-to-school season on campus is always an exciting time, so make sure you’re creating tons of memories because you’re only going to be an undergraduate student once (at least, most likely).
