The Story of a Girl’s Love/Hate Relationship with Rompers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

Is there such a thing as too trendy?

Sophomore Elara Cunningham seems to think so. “They’re so trendy that in 10 years our children will laugh at us for wearing short onesies as adults,” said Cunningham. The romper trend has come and gone and come again a few times over the years. One prominent period for the romper and jumpsuits was during the 70’s.

Romper originally were targeted to children, but were eventually adapted to be worn by adults. Rompers have made it from the kid’s section of Walmart to the runway during fashion week. The current romper trend seems to be taken by most young women. I think it is safe to say that you either own a romper, or know at least five people who do. There are so many options!

Tight ones, flowy ones, black ones, floral ones — rompers come in all different shapes, sizes, and patterns.

“There are a surprising amount of styles,” Cunningham said. The many different types of rompers make it almost impossible to not find one you’ll like.

“They have really casual ones, but also really fancy ones so they can be worn for any occasion,” Michaela Johnson, a sophomore journalism major, said.

Not only are there a lot of options, but it seems like every store that sells women’s clothing, has as selection of rompers. So once you find one you like, why not buy one in every color?

Appropriate for any occasion — they can be worn seasonally, too!

Pair it with a cardigan and converse for a walk in the park or with a statement necklace and heels for a night on the town, rompers are versatile for anything you plan to do.

“They’re like a classier version of overalls,” Michaela Vernon, sophomore government and politics major, said. “It’s the same cuteness and convenience of a dress, but you don’t have to worry about having a Monroe moment.”

Super convenient — except for when you have to take it off.

The romper is an automatic outfit. “They’re easier than putting two pieces together because it’s already one piece,” Johnson said. You only have to worry about one piece and your outfit is complete.

They are also convenient for unexpected weather changes. “I like that when it’s windy, you’re still covered,” Kayla Soos, sophomore business management major, said. While dresses will fly up and show everything that doesn’t need to be seen, the romper’s short-like bottoms keep everything covered.

However, one of the biggest downfalls, is when you have to take off your romper, there is no taking it off halfway. “It is seriously so hard to go to the bathroom in one,” Maya-Loren Peguero, a sophomore pre-med student, said.

Comfortable and cute — if you find one that fits.

While there are a lot of options to choose from, it can still be hard to find one that fits your body type.

“I like the way they look on other people, but they don’t look good on me,” Emily Waddington, sophomore hearing and speech major, said. “I feel like there are only certain body types that look good in rompers.”

If you have too short of a torso, you end up looking like an “oompa loompa” according to Lexi Karalekas, sophomore chemical engineer student. On the other hand, if you have too long of a torso, the shorts end up being a little too revealing, education student Mary Katheryn Hesse.

However, if you do find the perfect romper fit, the benefits are endless. “In a romper you can frolic as hard as you want,” Johnson said.
