Senior Spotlight: Zeke Melman, The Modern-Day Columbus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

As a world traveler, farmer, and future veterinarian, senior biology major Zeke Melman knows exactly how to live life on the edge.

Having spent a night stranded in a strange Bedouin man’s bed, Melman has experienced it all.

“I thought about sleeping on the side of the road, but I was so cold,” Melman said. “Then finally, this one guy stops… he was a little sketchy… he asked me where I was going, and then he told me to stay with him for the night and leave in the morning.”

As a traveler who knows how to survive in the wild, Melman lives by his own motto, Why pay when you can get something for free?

Melman has travelled to 14 different countries, including Croatia, Greece, Colombia, and one of his favorites, Switzerland.

“I like being dirty, and like, not showering for a week,” he said. “I love nature and extreme sports, like hiking, mountain biking, white-water rafting, and rock-climbing.”

Hoping to add more countries to the list, Melman is already planning his next exciting trip.

“Southeast Asia. Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. That whole area is next,” he said. “And then maybe if I have time, I’ll make my way to India and Nepal.”

In addition to travelling and spending time outdoors, Melman loves animals and is working to become a veterinarian.

“I grew up in a dog kennel,” he said. “My dad owns a dog kennel, and I used to sleep in the cages, where we would breed golden retrievers. I love dogs.”

Melman credits his father for helping to shape his character. He spent much of his childhood working in the kennel and driving cross-country with his father, visiting many national parks.

“My dad is practically me,” Melman said. “Same voice, same everything.”

Melman is particularly known for his spirited voice, energetic personality, and contagious enthusiasm.

“Zeke is probably the most adventurous guy I know,” Melman’s best friend, Jonny Berger, said. “I don’t know how he has the time to do it all. He’s constantly on a high…bouncing from one activity to the next.”

To pursue his passion for animal caretaking, Melman worked at the Maryland State Fair and at the University’s dairy farm in Clarksville, Maryland.

“I love cows,” he said. “Moonshine, one of my cows, is my favorite. She’s the background on my phone.”

Having gained much of his experience through the university, Melman offered some valuable advice for those just beginning their four years on campus.

“Take advantage of the area around… there is so much to do here,” he said. “There are so many different clubs, so many different opportunities that can help you with what you want to do with your life. If you get involved, then UMD is the best place to be.”
