A Girl’s Guide to Fitness at Marquette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

Did you spend more time at Chipotle than the gym this summer? Don’t worry, we all did. With the start of a new semester, now is the perfect time to start making a visit to the gym a routine part of your schedule. Use this simplified guide to navigate your on-campus fitness options.

Rec PlexConveniently located in Straz Hall, this newly remodeled recreational facility is ideal for those that are just starting to get into fitness. This building opens the earliest and is generally the least crowded, giving you enough privacy to comfortably work out without constantly making awkward eye contact with someone as you do your glute bridges. This building is also great for swimming thanks to the multiple open swim sessions offered throughout the day. After a few laps, be sure to relax in the stream room, sauna or whirlpool, girl. You deserve it!

Best for: Early Birds, Fitness Newbies and Mermaids (all other swimmers are welcomed too)

Rec CenterPerfectly situated at the heart of campus, the Rec Center is your typical campus gym. There’s never a dull moment in this building with the constant waves of students coming in to bust a sweat. Just don’t forget your MUID or you will be rather disappointed when you aren’t allowed to go through the infamous turnstile.Since most people rush up to the second floor, the basement is almost always quiet. If you ever feel inspired by the varsity tennis teams that practice in this building, consider checking out a few rackets and playing some tennis with a few friends for just five bucks!

Best for: Social Butterflies and Tennis Enthusiast

Club SportsCalling all “retired” high school athletes: there’s a club sports team for you to join! These fast-paced and highly competitive teams travel to defend their titles and prove that they still have game even after being off the court or field for a while.

Best for: Seasoned Athletes

Intramural SportsGather a group of friends, housemates or floormates and create an intramural team to take your bonding to the next level. Sure, there will probably be that one friend that takes it a little too seriously, but spending time together and making awesome memories should be worth the risk.

Best for: Large Groups

Running ClubIf you want to hang out with President Lovell you have to be able to keep up. Join the president’s running club to keep those lungs strong and legs toned.

Best for: Conditioned Runners

Making time to work out is often the biggest challenge. Finding the inner strength to dedicate a few hours a week to working out can be difficult but the payoffs (improved health, more energy and a hot new bod) will make everything well worth it.Don’t forget, spring break will be here before you know it!
