Winter can be viewed as a time where all life and happiness dies, but this season is also one of reflection and peace. Instead of seeing the outside world as drab or colorless, recognize the comfort of stillness. As animals and insects disappear, opportunities to enjoy the quiet of nature present themselves. Though time spent outside will be limited due to cold temperatures, take breaks to appreciate the silence of the outdoors. Whether you are walking to class or the grocery store, you can stop for a few seconds to truly experience the unique chill. Even watching an exhaled breath create visible clouds in the air can produce a sliver of delight. The world is still full of energy, it only requires closer examination.

Snow is something that is worth a couple months without heat. Anyone who doesn’t believe snow is magical is lying. Silence is a recurring theme with this aspect of winter. Whether the snowfall is light like fairy dust or violent as a blizzard, there are no cracks of thunder or sounds of pattering rain. Faint whistles of wind are the only things that break the hushed atmosphere. White specks coat the sleeping trees and fields. There is a sense of peace about this season that cannot be found in any other.

On a more relaxed note, winter provides everyone the ideal chance to rest. Even though humans don’t hibernate (unfortunately), this season gives everyone an excuse to remain indoors. Slowing down a busy schedule can remove many everyday stressors. Decompressing the mind with a good book, movie, or Christmas album can do wonders for one’s spirits.

Instead of giving into complaints or negative attitudes, value the experiences winter offers. Enjoy the quiet, the snow, and the leisure comforts of winter. Find its beauty.
