7 Things That I’ve Learned About French Bulldogs Since Adopting One

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marist chapter.

I am a dog person, and whenever I’m away at school, I can’t help but miss my fluffy friends terribly.  I have a Yellow Lab named Mia who is 8, and a French Bulldog named Louna (a French name, I thought I was clever) who is 2.  While I love my lab and will forever stand by the breed as being an excellent family dog, there is no denying that French Bulldogs are unique.  Here are some things that I have come to realize in my experience with the good ol’ frenchie.

1) They are SASSY

Okay, people often laugh at me when I say this, but it’s true!  They have a little strut that they do, and they give these stares that make you question every decision you’ve ever made.  I’ve had more stare-downs with my frenchie than I’d like to admit.

2) They have the same mannerisms

They all act the SAME.  They run the same, they lay the same, they all do this turning head thing–that is extremely adorable by the way–and they all snort like crazy.

3) They have ~crazy~ episodes

This was probably the most insightful discovery I made in my years with a French Bulldog.  They have these random episodes where they just, quite simply, attack you.  Louna will jump up out of thin air and wack my water bottle out of my hands and run off with it without a second glance.  She’ll run in circles around my house and spring off of furniture like a maniac.  This may just be her being a puppy, but I certainly don’t remember my Lab ever attacking my feet when I’m walking around the house.

4) They will eat literally anything…and somehow survive

Louna gave my family a scare when she decided to eat our glass lights off of the Christmas tree.  My mom was nearly in tears thinking she was for sure a goner.  However, she was miraculously able to digest broken pieces of glass with absolutely no problems at all.  She has also eaten pom poms off of my living room pillows, medal window blinds and coat buttons.

5) They can not handle heat

Two words: backward sneezing.  French Bulldogs often wheeze in a manner that is called backward sneezing by many.  If they are exposed to heat for too long, or overworked in any way, it may become difficult for them to breathe.

6) They’re very possessive, and definitely think they’re the leader of the pack

I said earlier that I have a Yellow Lab.  I did not mention, however, that this yellow lab is extremely large, weighing nearly 100 pounds.  This makes her five times the size of my French Bulldog Louna.  Many find this size difference humorous, but Louna certainly doesn’t feel small in terms of attitude.  She will literally steal toys from my Lab’s mouth and even run in front of her to get a treat.  Louna definitely feels like she is the alpha, regardless of her stature.

7) They hold a grudge

Louna does not forget and she ce’rtainly doesn’t easily forgive.  If I take, lets say, a couch cushion, away from her because she’s tearing it apart, I somehow become the bad guy.  She gives me these big puppy eyes wherever I go whenever I “do her wrong” and I always end up feeling guilty about it.

8) They’re adorable without even trying

Despite all their definite quirks, French Bulldogs are undeniably adorable.  From the way they act to the way they look, French Bulldogs are a universal favorite, and an amazing breed.
