The Ultimate Halloween Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

With the spooky night of Halloween drawing ever closer, I’ve designed a quick ultimate guide to the big day that’s guaranteed to get you inspired and help you create the perfect Halloween. So, if you haven’t already decided what to do this Saturday, scroll down and get your creative juices flowing! From cheeky tricks to sweet treats, there’s something for everyone in this ultimate Halloween guide.

Food:

This is the perfect season to make the sweet treats you’ve been craving! From candy to cake, here’s a couple of ideas to help you make the perfect Halloween confections that everyone will love.

Halloween ‘pumpkin’ gin jelly:

I tried this for the first time recently and it was super simple and really easy to do.

Four large oranges

Jelly cubes

Hot water

Gin (most importantly)

Simply cut off the top of the oranges and scoop out the inside of the orange, like you would do to a pumpkin. Make the gin jelly using the hot water, jelly cubes and gin, and fill each orange with the jelly mixture. Leave to set in the fridge until firm. Then cut out your Halloween pumpkin designs to create mini ‘look-a-like’ pumpkins.

Costume ideas:

If you’re anything like me, costume ideas are always a last minute thing. Whether you want a basic costume, or something a little more explicit, here are a few ideas to complete your spooky Saturday night outfit.

One Nightstand:

An idea given to me by my own mother, this one is sure to make you stand out from the crowd.

Naked Sims:

An idea I might steal as my own, this low budget costume will certainly turn heads. A printed green Sims diamond attached to a headband and either a nude slip or, if you want to go all out, a pixelated design painted or stuck onto a ballet board.

Make-up:

Creative Halloween make-up is a great way to design the perfect look without breaking the bank. Whether you’re looking for something that is terrifyingly scary or terrifyingly beautiful, here’s a whole load of inspired ideas for you!

The Unzipped Face:

This was a personal Halloween look of mine last year and it worked easily and cost under £10 for the whole look, even though it was the first time that I had tried it! This is a great look that will certainly cause some frights. All you need is some liquid latex (or eyelash glue), PVA glue, a zip and some red face paint or fake blood.

Poisoned Bride:

With porcelain make up prominent in the Halloween scene this year, create something different with your look and get creative with your make up with an idea that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Using white face paint and some black eyeliner, create a scary-beautiful look at its finest.

Decorations:

Decorate your house for less with cobwebs, homemade bunting and a few other spooky (but simple!) decorations.

Decorate your own balloons:

A fun way to get in the Halloween mood is to get orange and white balloons, and decorate them as you wish with creepy ghosts, black cats, witches hats and other Halloween-themed pictures. All you need is a black marker and a steady hand!

Spooky Bunting:

Bunting is always a favourite in student houses. So, why not get creative and make your own ghostly garlands, using things you probably already have in the house? All you will need is some tissue, cotton balls, elastic bands (or similar), a marker for the eyes and some string to tie the whole piece together.

Happy Halloween everyone!
