Beauty Blog - My top tips for gorgeous hair!

By Reim Medhurst
March 13, 2013 - 5:29pm

Below I’ve included my top tips I use to keep my hair healthy and frizz-free! 1. HAIRCUTS! It is a well-known fact that you ought to get your haircut every 6 weeks, to get rid of all the dead ends, however I always find that this isn’t realistic! As a student, it’s just impossible to pay for a haircut that often! I find that every 2-3 months is usually ok. When I have the money and want my hair styling a bit, I’m willing to pay more, but when I just want a couple of inches off I just get my hair washed and cut and it costs me £10! READ MORE

LGBT Blog - Amazon advert with a 'Gay Twist’

By Steph Muldoon
March 6, 2013 - 4:42pm

Amazon’s latest ad for the new Kindle Paperwhite shows a heterosexual and a homosexual couple on a balmy and bright beach. As a female and a male bond over built-in light, their male spouses are off buying beverages. Not only are they saying, yes, gay couples are not an alien species and can and do enjoy holidays, but they’re also putting across a pretty powerful message. Beneath the sickly sweet American smiles, it’s quite a progressive advert. What’s really striking about it, is the fact that no one would be able to instantly guess about who in the advert is gay and who is not. There are no worn-out stereotypes. READ MORE

Lost in Translation

By Maria Villanueva Cardenas
March 1, 2013 - 1:07pm

Since the last couple of days have been incredible sunny, I had planned to write my first blog entry outside my student room, enjoying fresh air and the sun in my face. So I came downstairs with my laptop and a mug of piping hot tea, in the hope of finding a nice spot to sit and just let inspiration come.  I spent around three minutes sat on a cold stone bench in front one of Lupton blocks, just until my hands got so cold that I couldn’t type on my keyboard - in that moment I knew my plan of enjoying the beautiful sunny day wasn’t going to work. Now I’m just admiring it from my room window. Yet for me, days here in Leeds are so cold, especially when you come from a country where the temperature rarely drops beyond 8° or 9° Celsius degrees, and that place is...

Love Life Blog - Slate Your Date

By Kirsty Bryden
March 1, 2013 - 12:16pm

Basically, I don’t date. It’s a rule I very rarely break. Dating is just too relationship-orientated, and when you’d rather rub your face against a cheese grater than consider the prospect of a boyfriend, dating is really a no-go area. Take going to the cinema for example, what if he talks through the film? What if he tries to eat my popcorn? What if he likes chick flicks?! I’m not suggesting this is aimed at the guy I was dating in January (it is) but Les Mis is the type of film I would rather claw my eyes out than see, it is not “my type of film” as you so kindly suggested. It has nothing to do with my ex getting a new hot girlfriend (it does) and I’m definitely not rebounding (I am) but basically, I broke my rule in 2013, and I started dating....

Fashion Blog - Watch this face…

By Izzy Atherton
February 25, 2013 - 10:49am

Friday 15th to Tuesday 19th February marked the most important week for British fashion… London Fashion Week. The buzz that surrounded New York Fashion Week flew across seas to London, the fashion capital and the home of innovative and daring designers. Much of the focus was the designers and their masterpieces, and rightly so, however, it is the model who takes the dress and turns it into something desirable, making guys swoon and women regret that extra large piece of cake. Modeling is known for being a pretty brutal business, but on the flip side being a model usually means you are incredibly good looking and naturally blessed so I’m not sure it’s a career to turn down. The World We Live In - Her name was Reeva Steenkamp

By Rachel Barker
February 20, 2013 - 4:26pm

On violence against women, and why we need feminism…  In the UK, one in seven female students are victims of sexual assault or physical abuse. Around the world, 1/3 of women are physically or sexually abused. On the 14th February, women and men all over the world took part in the One Billion Rising campaign, aiming to raise awareness of and help tackle violence against women and girls. From flashmobs to dance shows to plays, to lobbying elected officials to elected officials putting forward legislation, across the globe activists played their part in this incredible movement. Fashion Blog – Fashion Gets Funny

By Jade Warrilow
February 20, 2013 - 3:33pm

On March 15th it’ll once again be time to sport our red noses and do something ‘funny for money’. From celebs trying their baking skills on ‘The Great Comic Relief Bake Off’ to Jessie J’s promise to shave her head, everyone’s doing their bit to help and those in fashion are not ones to be left out! Stella McCartney is just one of fashion’s elite to get involved. In order to celebrate the cause, she has offered her design talents to Comic Relief this year and has created a capsule collection of t-shirts showing some of the world’s most famous faces (and a giraffe) wearing a red nose. LGBT Blog - Appearance, the Media and Stereotypes

By Steph Muldoon
February 17, 2013 - 9:10pm

For LGBT, February has been a startlingly significant month. First of all, it’s LGBT History Month and second of all, Britain is now on course to adopt gay marriage. This has led me to think about the way in which a lesbian’s appearance is understood and perceived within the media and within everyday life. READ MORE
