A Social (and very Physical) Experiment

This week, presenting you…

Body Combat

For a full intensity workout!

Now, this class had been recommended to me by a friend. What this friend failed to tell me was how crazy it would be! I was in no way prepared for what was to come, but I am so glad I have finally given it a go. And saying that, I’ll definitely be going again! Get ready for the most intense workout of your life. I present to you: Body Combat.

This week, I was really in need of a solid workout. After the overindulging that had occurred during Easter holidays, my fitness levels were declining, in desperate need of revitalisation. So it was back to Leeds and back to the gym. Following my previous experience with Boxercise, I thought I would give Body Combat a try. The instructors describe it as ‘a mix between taikwondo and kickboxing, building upon a foundation of martial arts’. From this, I expected it to be similar to Boxercise, consisting of punches and kicks, or something of the like. It was only when I got in there that things took a turn… But not for worst!

What I might otherwise call ‘kickboxing on speed’, this class certainly gets you going! There were points during the class where my mind started going fuzzy and I felt a bit spaced out. The energy that goes into it is insane! The routines incorporate push ups, squats, lunges and ab work into the mix, so you really feel the burn all round. You know you’ve come to the right place for a solid work out when you see sweat dripping off the instructors face onto the floor in the middle of push ups. And this instructor was ripped!

“BODYCOMBAT works your legs, tones your arms, back and shoulders and provides phenomenal core training. You destroy calories, develop coordination, agility and speed, and feel empowered.”

I have now been to both of the two branches of this classes at The Edge, each of varying intensity and style. For a beginner, I would say to try booking onto one of Marie’s classes, which eases you into the moves and steps, teaching them to you slowly and then picking up the pace. However, if you really fancy getting hot, sweaty, and energised, then try Mohammed’s classes during the week, either at The Edge or Cromer Terrace, for full intensity. It is after these classes that you find yourself dripping with sweat and red in the face, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I can highly recommend it!

The great thing about this class has to be the instant results; straight away, you notice the difference in your physique, so imagine the results after building this class into your routine! For a full on and rewarding workout, Body Combat is the class for you!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

Duration: 60 minutes

Intensity: 5 for beginners (depends really on the instructor)

Sweat: 5

Difficulty: 4 (depending on the intensity and the energy you put into it)

Aftermath: 4 (pretty exhausting, so make sure you eat afterwards!)

Result: 5
