The definitive list of Christmas Movies (in my opinion)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Now that I’m finally finishing up with work for Christmas I have very little planned apart from sitting on the sofa, eating selection boxes and working my way through the best Christmas films. If you’re stuck for a film this Christmas or can’t decide which film your Mum, siblings, significant other and Grandparents would all enjoy watching, I’ve compiled a list of a few of my all time favourite Christmassy movies.

The Grinch- I used to hate the Grinch, it made me feel sad; the flashback to baby Grinch in his school days makes me weep.  But now, the mature 21-year-old that I am, I see the hilarious side to the film. It’s scary how much I now relate to the Grinch himself and I love his dry sense of humour. Not to mention, how cute is whoville? Definitely the Christmas getaway! The Grinch is perfect for siblings and cousins, and it puts you right in to the Christmas spirit.

It’s A Wonderful Life- Probably quintessential Christmas film. Black and white and all about the true meaning of Christmas. Initially you wouldn’t even know A Wonderful Life was a Christmas film but it’s brilliant all the same. The best thing about it, at risk of sounding horribly cliché, is it actually does remind you about the TRUE meaning of Christmas. It’s a complete hit with absolutely everyone- but if you don’t cry at the end you’ve got a heart of stone…

Home Alone- What a classic. Kevin is left home by himself over Christmas and he does what every child WISHES they could do: eat as many sweets as you can fit side you and then he pulls the best pranks ever on The Wet Bandit. The best bit is there’s an equally as good sequel; Kevin takes New York, has a near miss with Trump and beats his old arch rivals- the Wet Bandits. So sit back, relax and enjoy a Home Alone Movie Marathon (but maybe skip number 3, they use a different actor for Kevin and think we wont notice).

The Holiday- If you’re feeling truly depressed and single this Christmas then get some inspiration from Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet; they say Goodbye to their boring lives and horrible ex-boyfriends and have the best Christmas ever.

Or, if you’re happily loved up (alright for some) then you can still enjoy the mushy, unbelievable romance of the The Holiday too- it might make you want to spice up your love life a bit. Or if you’re in neither position and are absolutely fine the way you are- I’m pretty sure you’ll still think it’s a fab film. Perfect for a night in with your friends or your Mum. A few bottles of wine, garlic bread and lots of chocolate buttons are the perfect accompaniment for a fabulous Christmassy feel good film!

What’s better than a classic Hugh Grant rom com? A Christmas themed Hugh Grant rom com, that’s what.

Love Actually-  This film probably has to top my list of favourite films ever. I’ll happily watch it in March, mouthing every line as I shout at Kiera Knightly, cry about Emma Thompson’s marriage and belt out ‘All I Want for Christmas’ at the end. This classic is the peak of British film making, in my humble opinion. So much so that Hollywood stole the multiple plot story line and produced New Years Day, Valentines Day etc. They may try but nothing comes close to Love Actually.

Now, this list isn’t the be all and end all of Christmas films. But it’s just my favourite few. So enjoy and have a wonderful Christmas.
