HC Leeds' Guide to Genuine Weight Loss

By Daisy Searle
February 20, 2013 - 3:13pm

It was this time last year, with a BMI of 26.15, when I decided that my life needed to change. Although difficult at times, I (with the help of my mother) was able to shed three stone and gain body confidence for the first time in my life. It is for the latter reason that I wish to share some of my simple secrets, whether you want to lose a lot, or just the extra Christmas layers. READ MORE

Beauty Rules for 2013

By Rosie Stagg
February 20, 2013 - 2:59pm

When it comes to make-up, I am a firm believer in the motto that ‘less is more’. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t really go anywhere without make-up on (even if just some mascara at the gym) as I am owner of a pair of barely visible eyebrows (and eyelashes) as well as a complexion nearing to that of Casper the friendly ghost. I believe putting a bit of make-up on in the morning makes me feel like I’m ready for the day ahead in the same way as washing and dressing does. READ MORE

LGBT Blog - Appearance, the Media and Stereotypes

By Steph Muldoon
February 17, 2013 - 9:10pm

For LGBT, February has been a startlingly significant month. First of all, it’s LGBT History Month and second of all, Britain is now on course to adopt gay marriage. This has led me to think about the way in which a lesbian’s appearance is understood and perceived within the media and within everyday life. READ MORE

It’s after Valentine’s Day, and your self esteem is low. In one hand there’s a donut, and in the other, a slice of cake. The “C” word - Edgy, Vulgar or simply the Vulva?

By Rebekah Cooper
February 17, 2013 - 8:32pm

There are many linguistic trends of the modern day, and those in educational environments are commonly seen as the largest group of instigators for such movements of vocabulary. Much of the time there exists the element of influence from popular culture; in particular television programmes, films, and the mother of all things viral – social networking sites. But once in a while a gem appears that spills from the mouth of youths and causes a glittering stir. A few years back 'gay' was adopted as a term used to describe something unappealing or 'sad', synonymous with phrases such as 'tragic' or 'cringe-worthy'. It would casually find its self dropped into conversations as if it meant nothing else: “Seriously, what’s she wearing? That t-shirt is so gay”,...

Make your memories count

By Imogen Hill
February 17, 2013 - 7:59pm

Being a student at university gives the best opportunities to make some of the most exciting memories, and meet new people who could become friends for life. But what with being busy students with dissertations to write, seminars to prepare for and an obligation to attend Fruity every Friday, we can sometimes forget the moments that made us the people we are today. I’m sure we can all remember our first days at secondary school, college and university, but can you clearly remember the first time you met your best friend, the first time you rode a bike without stabilisers or your first kiss? Being young and carefree, (well sort of, we still have to do some work!) makes it easy take for granted memories that we really should treasure for the rest of our...

Sun, Sea and Reality TV

By Rebecca Kent
February 17, 2013 - 7:46pm

Sun, sea, a ridiculous amount of cheap alcohol and freedom from parents: the holiday most of us long to – and often do – go on every year. But what happens when it all gets filmed? These cold winter months have attracted an influx of TV documentaries and reality programmes across several channels, all documenting young Brits enjoying holidays abroad in some of the most well-known party resorts in Europe. It’s no surprise that what we see is not a ‘nice’ group of girls or guys enjoying a ‘nice’ lounge by the pool whilst catching some of those much-needed rays, but instead is the chaos of what happens when the sun goes down, the music comes on and the booze comes out.
