Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Some people love the idea of a holiday dedicated to true love and can’t wait to spend it with their significant others. Others hate the idea behind the holiday and view it as arbitrary and unnecessary. Personally, I believe this holiday is dedicated to not just true love for your SO, but also true love for your friends, for your family, and for yourself. Personally, my roommates are my best friends and who I plan to spend my Valentine’s Day with.
My roommates are the ones who always send me horrendous Snapchats daily, help me with life advice, put me in check, and always know what to do when I’m stressed or hating my life. Most importantly, they are the ones that I can be weird with and not have to apologize for. This is the closest and greatest love that instead should be celebrated on Feb. 14.
Another reason that I only need my roommates this V-day is because with a guy, there’s all of this implied pressure and unnecessary anxiety. With my roommates, it’s easy and fun. As a college freshman, there should be no need to jump right into love. Instead, I want to focus on building friendships.
So why not celebrate being single and having your best friends? Too often, our girlfriends get left out when a guy gets into the picture. Our friends, and in my case, my roommates, are the ones who are always there when things don’t go as planned with a guy. None of us are letting the fact that we don’t have boyfriends get in the way of our happiness on the most romantic day of the year.
