Ten Thoughts I Have When Coming Home for Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season could be very intimidating to the average college student. Everyone who crosses your path – whether it’s Aunt Joan, someone you went to high school with, even Bigfoot himself – will probably ask “How’s school?” Naturally, the average college student says “Fine, everything’s fine at school.” Secretly, though, you want to scream.

Here are other thoughts we have when we are coming home from school:

  1. I cannot wait to eat Mom’s food!We love mom’s cooking and never realize how much we appreciate it until it’s gone. Dining hall food can only be so good, but nothing compares to coming home for the holidays and eating great food all the time.

  2. What should I pack to bring home?Do I pack clothes I might wear? Do I have clothes at home that I like? I don’t want to leave anything behind! How much makeup should I pack? I have to plan my outfits for the next week? And my makeup for the next week? I barely know what I am doing tonight!

  3. What do I already have at home?Do I need to bring my toothbrush or shower stuff home? Do I have face lotion at home? What about my hair products? Do I have anything at all?

  4. I hope I don’t have to see anyone I know from high school….Not only will I see distant relatives this season, but I will also run into my fellow alums. I mean it’s not horrible catching up with some people from school, but it sure is awkward trying to think of small talk with a girl you had freshman english with.

  5. I hope no one asks me how school is going, what my major is, what I want to do for a living, or if I am still singleThe dreaded questions: “how’s school?” “How are your grades?” “Are you still single?” “Did you stop dating ____?” “You look different, did you lose/gain weight?” and the ever so popular “What do you want to do with your major?” NONE of these are at all comforting to a college student. We are home to relax and not worry about school. I just chose my concentration, I don’t know what I want to do for the next 50 years!

  6. I hope Mom makes chicken parm while I’m home!!Still on the topic of real food, I, like other students, want my mom to cook my favorite foods. I also want to bring home all the leftovers I can and see how long I can live off of the leftovers before having to go to the dining hall again.

  7. I cannot wait to be reunited with my best friends!Going home is fun for many reason, including seeing your best friends from home. These people have stuck with you through all the high school drama, and maybe even elementary and middle school drama, too! Seeing them and catching up is fun, and creating new memories with them is even better!

  8. I cannot wait to do laundry for free!Did someone say free laundry????? Instead of paying $1.75 per wash/dry, I would much rather do my laundry at home without worrying about if I have enough money on my laundry card. Maybe my mom will even fold it for me!

  9. I’m going to miss my friends at college

You mean I have to leave my friends for a week? For a whole month, too? My friends at school are like family to me. They’ve seen me at my worst and at my best, they love me no matter what. I literally live with these people, how could I go this long without seeing them at least once each day?

10. REAL FOOD!!!!!!Did I mention you don’t have the eat at the dining hall?

That’s all, folks.
