Primark, a British retailer, is ready to test the waters and open its doors in the US. For most UK retailers, bringing their brand to the US has not been a wise choice, most recently with Tesco. However, retailers Topshop and Ted Baker have prospered. Primark states that after extensive research it has decided to take its brand to the US. This is Primark’s attempt at becoming a global chain, and is really a test point as to whether or not they will make it or break it as a retailer in the US.
Maureen Hinton, retail analyst at Conlumino, believes Primark will succeed in the US. “The main point about Primark is its price positioning. It is not going in as just another young fashion brand. It is going in as a young fashion brand with a very defined price edge on competitors that sets it apart. But it has all the trappings of the big stores and the feel of a more expensive fashion brand. I am sure that the likes of [US rival] Forever 21 are a bit worried.” The first store is set to open in 2015 in Boston with negotiations to open up eight more stores in northeast America.
