As college students, we are all on a budget. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t treat ourselves from time to time. The trick is to get creative, and use the materials you are already paying for! My friends and I like to make use of the dining hall, and make natural beauty treatments from a meal swipe. Here are our five favorite beauty tricks:

  1. Olive Oil Hair Treatment

Next to the salad bar, Sodexo keeps out different bottle of oils and vinegar to dress your salad with. However, there is a lot more you can do with those than make a salad! Go grab yourself a to-go cup, and fill up the bottom with a nice layer of olive oil. Take this back to your room, and soak your hair (not the roots though!) with the oil. Let it sit for about 20 minutes, and then wash it out. The next day your hair will be happier, shinier, and healthier! You can repeat this treatment once a week.

2.) Honey and Oatmeal Face mask

If you are struggling with dry skin, and I know you are because you live in a sweltering hot dorm room, then try making this oatmeal and honey face mask! You will have to get your ingredients for this in the morning, because the dining hall only has oatmeal during breakfast. Grab a to-go cup, and get just a small scoop of oatmeal, and a little bit of honey. Take it back to your room, mix it up and then get to making your mask! The exact recipe for this mask is 3 tablespoons of ground oats, 1 tablespoon of hot water, and 1 tablespoon of honey. If you don’t have a measuring spoon, that’s fine, it’s not an exact science. Apply generously to your face, and let it sit for about 15 minutes. After you wash off the mask, make sure you moisturize!

3.) Yogurt and Honey Face Mask

This face mask both brightens your skin, as well as moisturizes. To get the ingredients to make this mask, you need to visit the dining hall at breakfast again. Grab a tiny bit of yogurt and some honey. Take it back to your room and mix one teaspoon of honey with one teaspoon of yogurt. Apply generously to your face, and then let it sit for 15 minutes. After you wash it off the mask, make sure to apply lotion.

4.) Honey Hair Treatment

Is your hair dry or damaged after a long dry winter? Grab a to-go cup and fill it up a quarter of the way with honey. Take it back to your room and cover your clean damp hair with a light layer of honey from root to tip. Let it sit for twenty minutes, and then rinse out with warm water. To make the honey come out of your hair easier, you can mix a small amount of olive oil in with the honey. Do this treatment only once a month.

5.) Nail Growth

This one is a cool one! If you want your nails to grow faster, fill up a to-go cup with orange juice from the juice station. The vitamin C will strengthen your nails. Take this back to your room, and soak your fingers in orange juice for ten minutes. Then, rinse of your fingers, pat them dry, and apply lotion. You can repeat this every day until you are happy with the results!
