The SoCal College Student’s Guide to Downtime

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

College is tough! In between classes, work and your social life it’s hard to find downtime to decompress and relax. Here are a few things you can do this weekend to help keep you sane.

  1. Go to a concert or show Free!!- One of my favorite things to do with friends is hitting up free concerts! Our favorite way to get free tickets is by checking out the 1iota website. They have Jimmy Kimmel concerts for free, Talking Dead, iHeart Radio and many other free concerts and shows. During one of the Jimmy Kimmel free mini-concerts we came early and got free concert tickets for a Macklemore show! Another time we got free tickets to the iHeart Radio concert in Vegas, which were valued at $600 a ticket! It’s a great website to get free tickets and make great memories!

2. Take a day-cation!

Ojai– This is a small town about 2 hours north-west of Los Angeles, with traffic. It’s known for being a relaxing getaway spot with tons of shopping, hiking locations places to lounge by the pool and wine tasting. If you do end up stopping in town, make sure you check out Bart’s Books, it’s a super cute outdoor bookstore!

3. Santa Barbara– A small wealthy beach town, Santa Barbara is a little over 2 and a half hours from ULV. If you want to spend the day taking astheitic instagram pics on a beautiful beach, look no further!

4. Los Angeles– Los Angeles has so many great things to do, but I could definitley recommend taking the day to go visit museums. Some mesuems that have discounted rates for students are MOCA, LACMA and the Museum of Natural History. For lunch you could visit the Grand Central Market, a large foodhall with tons of options for every palette and great retro neon signs for pictures. After lunch, come visit the Bradbury Building its only a small walk away from the Grand Central Market and another great location for your instagram pics!

5. Pasadena- Every second Sunday of the month, the Rose Bowl hosts a huge flea market with tons of vendors selling everything you could imagine from vintage furniture to brand new clothing and succulents! I would highly reccomend attending this at least once, I go every month!

6. Workout!

You can take on yoga, running, hiking, boxing or so many others! I have taken kickboxing and yoga classes before and they both were great ways to decompress from a long day of classes! At ULV, one of the yoga preofessors, Gloria Montebruno, doesn’t mind if you want to sit in on a class, in fact she encouraces students to bring a freind who is in need of relaxation!

7. Have a movie night!

Grab your boo and head to a drive in! There is the Mission Tiki Drive-In in Montclair and I would reccomend this location! It’s a great idea to pack a bag of snacks, some hot coco and to stuff you car full of blankets!Stay in and have a netflix binge night! If you’ve never seen The OA, Stranger Things or Narcos, then I highly reccomend this method of relaxing!

8. Take a girl’s night to do something fun!Disneyland! This is a great way to bond with friends and have fun, although Disneyland can get a littley pricey it’s worth it!

9. Laser Tagging! Bring out your competitive side with your gang and get moving, it’s a great workout ans also affordable! Some laser tag places can be as cheap as $10 a game!

Remember to have fun and enjoy your day of decompression before Monday comes around and you have to hit the books!
