Navigating Lunch at Davenport

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

Ah lunch, the midday meal.

Long lines and classes can get you stressed and indecisive about what to choose for lunch at DP, especially with each day’s surprise special.

Here are 3 meal ideas to keeping healthy and happy without resorting to pizza and fries!

1. Build your own chicken salad.

Grilled chicken is always in stock in the Classic section, and you can always order a fresh piece at the grill. Cut a piece into a mix of light romaine and darker green spinach for a healthy mix of protein and vitamins.

Plus you can experiment with the salad bar’s rotating toppings like Goldfish, almonds, and dried cranberries!

Davenport always offers multiple dressings, but I usually like to go the simple route with some olive oil and vinegar. You can even get really fancy and play with the spices that make their home right next to the pizzas. And if you’re craving just some kind of bread, savor the taste of freshly baked bread by picking up some pitas from the salad section and giving them a run through the toaster!

Incorporating olive oil, nuts like almonds, and darker, leafy greens like spinach into your diet is awesome for fighting off heart disease in the long run and may help in lowering bad cholesterol. With all the foods easily shaping us up for heart and weight problems, it’s a relief small habits can really make a change.

2. Fire up the Panini machine!

DP offers a selection of different meats, cheeses, fresh and roasted veggies and all kinds of bread in the sandwich section daily.

Melt some cheese on lean turkey with toasty whole grain bread and add color and freshness with tomato slices and lettuce.

3. Hit the grill!

Order a turkey patty on honey wheat bread and add spinach, tomato, onion, and other toppings from the salad bar and sandwich section. Add jalapenos for a kick!

EXPERT LEVEL: Go protein style and nix the bread for lettuce from the sandwich section for a wrap.

Keep your eyes open about the options available and have fun with mixing and matching! Start with lean protein and a small rainbow of fruits and veggies, and you can keep healthy and happy with your midday recharge!
