Puppy fever hit me real hard during my freshman year in the dorms. My roommate and I would fantasize about the different breeds we would have and the names we would give them.

WELLL this summer the fever turned into reality and I got my first puppy! I picked him up after the first week of classes and I am here to share the pros and cons of becoming a dog mom senior year.

PROS

  1. Unconditional love

Honestly this is such a cliché pro, but I truly feel that my pup Luca loves him with all of his heart and then some. He cuddles in my lap during car rides, smuggles up to me in the mornings and gets soo incredibly excited when I walk in the door after those rough classes.

  1. Exercise

Now I definitely love my gym sessions, but there is nothing like taking Luca on a walk outside! It is a really nice change in pace. Instead of walking in a room full of other people on a machine, I get to breathe in the fresh air and not feel awkward that I am by myself, because I have my little guy for company! And as he gets older, he gets to exert himself more and we can go on hikes, take runs on the beach and take camping trips around Cali.

  1. Netflix buddy

Now I have a cuddle buddy while watching my favorite shows! Just in time for StrangerThings and Peaky Blinders WOO

  1. More friends

New fluffy lovebug equals more friend time! Friends that I haven’t seen in a while now come visit for puppy playdates! I mean I know they want to be with Luca but it’s a huge bonus for my social life too.

I’ve also met new people who have their own dogs and we get to chat about puppy stories and plan puppy play dates ( like the extra people we are )

CONS

  1. Potty training

Now Luca didn’t have too many accidents, but boy was it exhausting to have to take him out every 30 minutes! It was really hard starting homework and really getting into the groove but then needing to stop to take him out. But with consistency, it wasn’t too terrible of a con.

  1. Money

Now getting Luca really dented my wallet. The vet, the toys, the bed, the crate, the gate, and food are definitely items you need to think about and budget. I saved for years so it wasn’t a complete sticker shock but it was really tough to part with my hard-earned and saved cash. While Luca has cost me quite a bit of money, it has totally been worth it.

  1. Biting

This has probably been the WORST con in my opinion ahhaha. Luca’s teeth were like sharp, brutal needles and he bit every part of my body the first couple of weeks! He somehow even found my boob (which is barely even there) and wow I saw stars! I found a trainer to help me with this though and it has been SO MUCH BETTER.

So yeah is there cons to getting a puppy in college? Yes. The pro’s for me personally have far outweighed the cons and I have a partner in crime for years to come!
