To the Teacher Who Told Me I Wouldn’t Make It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

How are you doing?  I’ve heard well from those I’ve asked about you. It’s been 3 years since I’ve been in your classroom. I won’t lie; I DON’T miss it at all. Not because of you, but because your subject didn’t interest me. I personally don’t dislike you, I just disliked your personality. Let’s be honest, you’re a sarcastic person. So am I. You were very blunt. I, on the other hand, like to think before I speak.  I won’t denounce you as a teacher though. In my opinion, you were a tiptop educator. You did a fair job at instructing us and despite what my grades showed, I did learn a lot. There were times I wondered if you would ever think highly of me, like you did for other students.

It wasn’t until you said the words “You won’t make it at Kutztown.” Your words cut like a knife, deep and leaving wounds.  I was shocked, hurt, and confused as to how your mouth could spit a sentence so demeaning towards a student. Fortunately, I have nothing against you. I could’ve been spiteful and called you a terrible teacher.  Instead, my parents raised me better. I truly wish you the best and would like to thank you for shaping me into the student I am now.

First, thank you for pushing me to reach out and do more. Not only am I currently a junior here, I also have joined various activities on campus.  My first semester, I was involved in our school’s student government board. I know it may sound shocking, but yes, I did play a part in making decisions for all students who attend the University.  Next, I have two jobs on campus.  I work aside the mascot team, as well as have a desk receptionist job in a freshman dorm. I recently became a member of Sigma Alpha Pi, or The National Society of Leadership and Success. I’ll let you on in a secret; you’ve got to have brains to be recruited for this organization. I joined HerCampus, where I am able to write about anything on my mind, and have it published. So far, my articles have been receiving successful feedback. I was shocked by the amount of texts and messages telling me how great each article is and how proud many people are. Lastly, I am on the executive board for Kutztown’s National Residence Hall Honorary.  A fun fact about NRHH is that it’s the top 1% of leaders living in the residence halls. I’ve only been in NRHH for one semester and I already hold a leadership position. Guess I am doing something right, right?

Your class has actually helped me here. One of my required courses in the business core was Business Law. I was surprised when I started learning material I had been taught previously… from you!! Thank you for that. I guess I did pay attention in your class if I was able to remember many topics you spoke about. I am doing well in my marketing courses. I absolutely love this school and know I am doing great here. I’ve found passion, excitement, and I am constantly yearning for more.  I have met some of my greatest and best friends here (shout out to Cassie, Jef, my roommates, and the Bonner’s Hunnies crew), I have gained so much knowledge that I will forever treasure from this place, and I have slowly, but surely, gained back the confidence that you took away in one sentence. There were many days and nights I thought I couldn’t do it. I had actually thought you were right. Tears fell, questions arose. Though shaken, I was not broken. I refused to ever allow myself to think so low.

I am proud to let you know that in December 2018, I will be graduating from the same school as you once did. I will have the honor to say I graduated with a Marketing degree with a minor in Women’s and Gender’s studies. My degree will match yours that will say “You did it. You earned a degree from our institution. Congrats!” This isn’t a petty letter of how I resent you. Truthfully, if I were to see you now I know we would pick off where we left off, laughing and busting on each other. This is me saying you’re wrong, I did make it and still am.
