Here at Kutztown, finding off campus housing creates a lot of stress for the potential buyers, landlords and current renters. This experience starts early on in the semester with students of all ages and standings walking through strangers homes.

In my house, there are four other girls I live with. In our housing contracts it states something along the lines that as long as our land lord gives us a 24 hours advance notice, he can show our property to potential new renters for the upcoming year. As soon as all of us get the email of this “walk through” the group chat blows up.

Concerns come flooding out. Pets need to be hidden, rooms need to be cleaned, dishes have to be washed, all because we are worried of the potential judgment from the strangers of Kutztown and the obvious breaking of our landlords rules. Now, of course we then get ourselves together and do what needs to be done. However, there is nothing worse than when you forget about these “walk throughs.”

We tend to keep our communal areas tidy and inviting but our rooms are a different story. A long night out produces a rather messy room, and a full day of class creates some laziness. So, sometimes cleaning up is put on the back burner.

This past weekend, my roommate and I had gone out on a Thursday night (It was during the strike so it’s okay) and we had gone to bed blissfully unaware of the morning ahead of us. We wake up and chat about that night, take our time and make our way downstairs to make some breakfast.

Now mind you, I myself was wearining a large shirt with no pants on, makeup smeared across my face, and my hair was falling out of this very messy knot, that some might call a bun. My roommate didn’t look much better. As we are chatting, there is an abrupt knocking at our front door. My roommate looks at me in terror. She opens the door; its our landlord with two male house-hunters.

Our landlord looks at us and obviously realizes that we were not prepared for company. He politely asks if we needed a minute. We run upstairs and throw the bras and panties in our hampers, I find pants and just try to get my life in order. The landlord and house-hunters were done within a matter of minutes. It was then that my roommate and I burst out laughing.

Over all, we figured that as much as we like to say that we are prepared for what life throws at us, we’re not. This season of home invasions will be coming to an end as the fall semester comes winding down. All I can say is hide your undies, pets, and check your email.
