Why Having a Diary is a Good Idea

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

I’ve recently started writing in a journal, or diary; or whatever you want to call it. With time I’ve realized that keeping a little notebook to jot down your thoughts is actually a really genius idea.  Many people, I think, use their social media (for which I am guilty, as well) as a crutch. They use it as a way to get their feelings out in the open so that their emotions are not bottled up inside. Even though not holding back your feelings is a great idea; I think other people can get annoyed if you post something every five minutes about how you love your boyfriend one minute and cannot stand the look of him the next.

Having a diary enables you to express your innermost feelings without having negative consequences happen. A diary can’t yell at you or tell you that your ideas are stupid. A diary can’t spill all of your secrets, or tell you that you’re just being naive and ridiculous. A diary is there for you to feel better and to vent your feelings. Sure, you may have a few people who you can tell everything to, but with a diary you can write down things that you don’t even want to tell yourself. I think that for those people who have trouble sleeping at night, a diary would be a good idea to have because you can organize your thoughts and get them out of your head.

I believe that a diary can help keep you more organized, in general. It could be your way to vent, a way to keep track of your schedule, a way to keep track of schoolwork, or anything you could imagine writing down. You could even draw little pictures inside if you’re feeling it. I think that this generation is somewhat missing out on how beneficial something like this is. Everything is turning technological and online; more things are being typed instead of handwritten. Personally, I love the idea of being able to open and read a book. With having my own diary; I’m basically writing my own book about my life and all that happens. I think having a dairy would be cool to look back on in a couple years and see how much life has changed. Anne Frank kept a diary and now many people have read it; but it gave so much insight to what was happening during that time and how much she struggled. I’m not saying that one day someone is going to find your diary and publish it to the whole world, I just think it’s a really awesome idea knowing that there’s a way you can remember your own history by writing it yourself.
