A Playlist for an Incoming Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Being a college freshman, something I really struggled with was my confidence. I was in a new place, surrounded by new people and doing new things. I was entirely out of my comfort zone but quickly discovered who I was as a person. I am no longer the girl I was in high school and I attribute that entirely to being at a position in my life where I can truly explore my beliefs, who I am and what I want.

Before I left the house every morning, my mom would send me off to school and say, “Know who you are and what you stand for.” Although I thought I knew what the phrase meant, I had a very shallow understanding until I was able to leave the nest.

Recently, my mom sent me a link to Colbie Caillait’s newest music video for ‘Try’ and it got me thinking about all the wonderful songs out there that, make me feel powerful and confident. These songs inspire. Be confident,  show the world what you can do, and like Iggy Azalea, be fancy.

1. “Try” by Colbie Caillait This new release embodies feeling good in your own skin. The song makes you feel beautiful and the music video is even better.

2. “Firework” by Katy Perry Listen to Katy Perry and never let yourself feel like a plastic bag. This song reminds listeners that just like fireworks, you should let people see you shine.

3. “Brave” by Sara Bareilles Sara Bareilles reminds listeners that they determine their own destiny and only the brave stand up for themselves and let the world see them for who they relly are.

4. “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips Ever since Bridesmaids, my friends and I jam out to this song without ever truly listening to the words. The lyrics however, portray a fantastic message about taking control of your life and putting fate in your own hands.

5. “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield Forever reminding me of the opening credits for The Hills, Natasha Bedingfield sings a song about living in the moment and enjoying the little things in life.

6.”Girl On Fire” by Alicia Keys Overcome the challenges in your life with flame in your eyes. Alicia Keys reminds listeners to stand tall and be the girl on fire that no one can bring down.

7. “Run the World (Girls)” by Beyonce This Beyonce song is classic girl power.

8. “Fly” by Nicki Minaj feat. Rihanna This girl power duet means business with their anthem for two girls who often don’t stand up for themselves.

9. “Follow Your Arrow” by Kacey Musgraves This feel good tune reminds you to not only be yourself, but to “follow your arrow” wherever it points you.

10. “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea She calls herself the New Classic for a reason. Follow her lead and make a name for yourself.

11. “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield Is an explanation really needed for this one?

12. “Beautiful” by Christina Aguiliera This classic anthem reiterates confidence in oneself and being beautiful in your own way. For being a song from 2004, Aguilera puts a spotlight on LGBT and domestic abuse in a time when others weren’t.

13. “***Flawless” by Beyonce Bey isn’t the only one who can wake up looking flawless. Werk it gurl.
