Office of Multicultural Affairs’ Tunnel of Oppression

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs’ Tunnel of Oppression is an annual multimedia experience held at the Sabatini Center in the final week of October. The event features a tour through a series of rooms and offices at the OMA. In each room, viewers are exposed to different forms of oppression through skits, videos, posters, and other interactive displays. The purpose of the Tunnel is to foster KU students’ and faculty’s awareness of different forms of oppression and the different groups affected by it. The aim of the Tunnel, as stated on the OMA’s website, to “provide a learning opportunity to have a deeper understanding of how a person’s decisions impact the lives of others”as well as to acknowledge the often overlooked privileges many members of the KU community take for granted. The event is held annually in October or November, and runs this year from October 26-28.

Marissa Ventrelli is a Freshman at the University of Kansas majoring in journalism. She currently writes for Her Campus and takes photos for her school's newspaper, the Daily Kansan. Her goal is to become a photojournalist for National Geographic but also to own several dogs and have a pathetically impressive collection of nut butters. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, hiking, volunteering, and writing about herself in the third person. After graduation, she hopes to move to Oregon where she will mock its citizens while simultaneously identifying with them on a deep level.
