How to Drink Tea: A Beginner’s Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

In the cold winter months, it’s important to shake up your coffee routine (or addiction), and supplement some tea into your diet. Although the usual perception of tea is: for old people, for English people, for rich people, or for people who have poor taste, take a risk and try something new this week!

Tea can be a bit more complicated than coffee with it’s variety of flavors, and I’m here to help you find your favorite cup. The following is a list of tea terms and tea types.

Herbal: this means that the tea is caffeine free and all-natural, a good reassurance for first time tea testers.

Ginger tea: sweeter in taste, ginger tea is the ultimate digestion aid and goes perfectly with dessert after dinner.

Green tea: actually green in color, this tea produces an earthy tone, and is a health antioxidant for all situations.

Peppermint: another good one for stomach aches and ailments, as well as a good way to refresh your day.

Hibiscus: fruity and lively, if flowers were tea, they would be hibiscus.

Lemon: a lively burst of flavor, great to start your morning or give you a little extra energy in the afternoon.

Matcha: one of my all time favorite tea’s, just because of its extra step up from green tea. This is perfect for smoothies or lattes.

Chai: a black tea with a mixture of spices, chai tea lattes are very popular in coffee shops around the world.

Chamomile: relaxing blend, often used to cure insomnia or de-stress.

Cinnamon: a flavor of tea, and also something that can be sprinkled on top for some extra flavor.

Honey: a burst of sunshine, honey is a great natural additive for when you don’t like the butter flavor.

Sugar: and when all else fails and you can’t stand another sip of tea, just add some sugar until you’re liking is desired. Tea is like coffee in the sense that everyone prefers a different variety, and play around with what suits you best.
