Healthy and Affordable Snack Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

There’s nothing quite like that extra-cheesy pizza that you and your friends scarf down or those delicious pancakes that iHop serves all night long while you’re drunk and it feels like nothing else really matters. But when morning (or afternoon) comes rolling around, there might be a few regrets, perhaps about that delicious pizza or pancakes. Eating healthy can seem hard, expensive, and tedious. With all the fresh ingredients you need to buy, the cost can get shoot up pretty fast. So, here are some healthy easy-to-make (and affordable) snacks that any college student can make.

Ants on a Log

This snack is well-priced and easy to put together after a long day of classes. Almond butter is generally more healthy, but tends to be a little pricier, so peanut butter will do. Add some raisins and maybe some honey and you’re set.

Hummus, Cucumbers and Tomatoes

This is tasty and one of my favorites. Cucumbers and tomatoes (I prefer cherry tomatoes) aren’t badly priced. Slice up the cucumbers and throw in some tomatoes with salt and pepper on top. Pick (or make) any type of hummus that sounds good to you and use it as a dip. If you don’t use the whole cucumber, tightly wrap the cut end with plastic wrap, stick it in a plastic baggie, and put it in the fridge. It’ll last for several days.

Apples and Peanut Butter

If you’re looking for something to hold you over, this is a perfect snack. Cut up an apple and dip it in peanut butter. Simple.

Rice Cakes with Yogurt and Fresh Fruit

Depending on the season, berries can fluctuate in price. If you see a good deal, grab some! Putting yogurt on rice cakes with fresh fruit on top is delicious.

Sliced banana and Peanut Butter with Nuts and Raisins

Simply slice a banana in half, add some peanut butter (or almond butter), even add a little bit of honey, and put on nuts (walnuts are my favorite) and some raisins. Voilà!
