Campus Style with KU Student, Madison Tubbs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Whether you find her jamming out in a venue to her favorite local band, browsing shelves of music at the downtown record store, or simply enjoying a coffee with friends in a laid back café, Madison Tubbs’ expressive style never seems to falter. Difficult to describe, her unique sense of fashion has a personality within itself, capable of standing out in a sea of Vineyard Vines and Patagonia on campus. As a Visual Arts major, Madison’s educational pursuits strongly reflect not only her unique, chameleon-like wardrobe, but also her bubbly and outgoing personality. Whether her outfit be punky and mysterious one day and then feminine and sweet the next, Madison can be described as nothing short of a fashion risk taker. In light of her unique style, I took the opportunity to sit down and ask Madison (@sunsetbackbones) more about her inspiration and love for fashion.

HC KU: How would you describe your style?

MT: It’s all over the place. In a sense, I feel like it’s because I don’t know myself well enough to be specific about what I like. I can dress anywhere from punky dark and emo, to feminine, flirt, and minimalistic depending on how I feel that day.

HC KU: Where do you get your fashion inspiration?

MT: I’m not really sure. Like the internet maybe? Just exposure to new ideas influences my wardrobe a lot. There’s this girl, Blair Eadie (@blaireadiebee), on Instagram whose style I like. She has a lot of different styles, from classy and sophisticated to edgy and girly. She inspires me a lot.

HC KU: Do you have a favorite current trend?

MT: Chelsea boots and jean jackets–denim! 100% denim!

HC KU: What’s your biggest style pet peeve?

MT: I don’t really have too many fashion pet peeves, but one thing I cannot stand is brand clashing! And also probably gauchos of course, because let’s be honest, those are awful.

HC KU: What are your favorite places to shop?

MT: I’m all over the place, but I like shopping at ASOS, NastyGal, and American Apparel. They are probably my favorite.

HC KU: Why is fashion important to you?

MT: For me, it gives me a sense of self-confidence. If I feel confident in what I’m wearing, I feel confident in whatever I do. I also think it’s a great nonpermanent way of expressing yourself verses getting a tattoo, piercing or dramatic haircut.

HC KU: Do you have any go-to, everyday pieces that you wear?

MT: Not really, unless makeup counts. Fierce brows and a bold lip makes my whole look seem more put together!

HC KU: Lastly, do you have any advice for other college students when it comes to personal style?

MT: Don’t be afraid to go and try out things that are weird or bizarre, because you never know, it could be the next new trend. Just don’t be afraid to express yourself through your clothing. It gives an essence of who you are to other people.
