Braving the Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Having a relationship in college is hard enough as it is, but when your significant other doesn’t live on your campus or even within an hour, long distance multiples the difficulty level by 10. Proceed with caution, long distance isn’t for the faint-hearted.

But don’t fear, it’s not an impossible task. Whether you’ve been separated by work purposes, the military or services, or simply attend different colleges, long distance relationships can seem like a curse, but they say absence makes the heart grow fonder. While the relationship dynamics may be strange and unfamiliar at first, you’ll adjust to the distance as time goes on.

Thanks to technology, you have the ability to talk to them face to face as long as you have Wifi and a good connection. It’s also important to keep in touch throughout the day. Send them an encouraging text before their least-favorite class, or ask them the high and low of their day. And when your boyfriend/girlfriend lives far enough away, a cute hobby to try is letter sending. Write a quick note about how much you miss them or draw them a doodle, there’s nothing better than recieving mail from a loved one.

Depending on your situation, it may be possible to visit each other. While this could be stressful (you want everything to be perfect after all), it does have to be. You don’t have to go out to a fancy dinner or go to the local dance club. Both of you miss each other so much, as long as you’re together that’s what matters. If plans go astray, don’t worry about it. The fact that you have the luxury of running your fingers through their hair is more than enough when it comes to long distance. Suddenly, even their annoying eating habits seem adorable, and you miss the way their laugh sounds in person.

Overall, the most important thing to remember is the big picture: why go through the hardship of being apart? It’s so that one day you can be together again, and even if that day is not today or even next year, eventually the long distance is sure to bring one another back together again.
