Awista Kamwand ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

It only seems fitting that the last cutie I write about is myself. Call it conceited or arrogant, that’s fine, but interviewing someone new every week, asking them personal questions, and, on occasion, making them squirm, definitely had me thinking about how I would respond if I were to ask myself those very same questions. The tables have turned, and your campus cutie correspondent has finally put herself in the hot seat. My time with HCKU has been short, but so incredibly fun and fulfilling. It was the perfect way for me to explore yet another avenue that KU had to offer me, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Name: Awista Kamwand

Year: Senior

Major: Communication Studies

Relationship Status: Taken

Hometown: Lenexa, KS

Campus Activities: VP for KZOO, Campus Cutie Correspondent for Her Campus KU.

Activities Outside of Campus: I’ve spent the last couple years working at TITLE Boxing Club Lawrence, so I put in quite a few hours there a week both working and working out. If I’m not there or at school studying, I’m usually out on the weekends in either Lawrence or Kansas City spending time with friends and family.

Life Motto: Embrace your struggles and let them make you a better person. God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.

Turn ons: Intelligence coupled with a strong work ethic, Humor, Strong arms, Romance (I am easily the sappiest person on the HCKU Team, and I’m completely fine with it) Eyes, Lips, Loyalty. Also, a man who smells good.

Turn offs: Arrogance, Poor hygiene, Laziness, Pessimist, Dishonesty

Dealbreakers: Smoking!

What are you most excited for after graduation? Starting the rest of my life. College has been fun and I have grown so much, but I’m ready for a new environment and experiences. “A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.”

Celebrity Crush: Shemar Moore

Things people would never guess about you? I am a HUGE nerd in disguise. I love learning random facts that will serve no purpose in my life other than having unnecessary amounts of even more unnecessary information stored in my brain.  Also, I have an obsession with Criminal Minds. I. Can’t. Stop. Watching.

What is one thing you couldn’t go without for a day? Telling Momma Afghan I love her!

What’s your signature drink? If I said anything other than Moscato, I would be a liar. White, pink, or red, I’ll take it.

So, you’re a senior. Give us some words of wisdom! What’s one thing you urge women to stop doing? If it feels wrong, DON’T DO IT. Always, always, always do what is best for YOU, regardless of the comments people will make. Someone will always have something negative to say, so just remember that you are the most important, beautiful, wonderful version of you. Stay true to what feels right in your heart and it will never lead you astray.

What’s your best quality? I am loving, loyal and compassionate to a fault.

What’s your worst quality? See above. Also, I am FIESTY. This can arguably be quite humorous at times, but I am passionate about what I love and who I love, so if anyone does wrong to me or my people, they will know. I’m only 5’2” but don’t let that fool you into thinking I won’t give you a piece of my mind!

Favorite music artists: Beyonce, Miguel, Jhene Aiko, John Legend, Trey Songz, Drake, Hunter Hayes. One of these things is not like the others…

Favorite meal to come home to after a long day: Stuffed salmon, Sweet or mashed potatoes, and Sautéed asparagus. And a glass of red wine. Feed me and I’ll love you forever.

Favorite store: Nike. But since I’m poor, Forever 21 or H&M  always does the trick for me.

What has been the best experience of your college career thus far? The moment I accepted my internship was amazing. I had been feeling very discouraged regarding what job I would be getting post graduation, and the moment I said, “Yes, I accept” I felt like every bit of hard work I put into all the exams, projects, all-nighters, etc. paid off. YAY for all the hard work paying off!

What’s your guilty pleasure? Pinterest, Selfies, Country ballads. Judge me.

Advice you would have given to a younger you: It’s okay to fail. It doesn’t mean you’re a failure, and it doesn’t mean that you are worthless. It means you are growing. You are smart, beautiful, funny, and compassionate. You are in charge of what happens to you. Don’t let your potential just sit there, use it, and exceed it.

Something you wish more guys would do: Don’t ever stop woo-ing your girl. What it took to get her is what it takes to keep her.

Most romantic thing a guy has done for you: When we were first getting to know each other, he picked up on the fact that I love R&B, and surprised me with tickets to see Miguel and Trey Songz in concert. It was spontaneous and fun and even romantic! Everything about that night was perfect.

Describe your ideal guy in three words: Martin Jamal Craig

Ideal date: If there’s food involved, I’m a happy girl! I’m so open to new experiences that it really doesn’t matter what we do or where we go; as long as I’ve got my man by my side, I know I’m in for a good time.

What motivates you? My drive for success has been embedded in me by my parents. They have done everything in their power to make sure I have all the tools I need to be successful, but more importantly, they have loved me unconditionally. I would be nowhere without their support, encouragement, patience, and tough love. I only hope to love my children half as much as they have loved me, and I can’t wait for the day where I can repay them (if that is even possible) for all that they have done and continue to do for me.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Happy and successful!

Why do you think you’re a catch? Don’t be shy now? Because I’m the only me out there, and that’s pretty special.

To say my college experience was typical would be quite the understatement. No person’s experience is the same, and that’s the beauty of it. Attending KU was a decision that has molded me into the person I am today. I lost myself and found myself. I failed and I succeeded. I faced heartbreak and I also fell in love. I am leaving with a heart filled with love and joy, a degree, and a job. It has been a challenging and wonderful chapter of my life that I wouldn’t take back for a second, and I can’t wait to see what my future holds. Thank you, Her Campus KU, for being a part of it.
