5 Things to Highlight on Your List of Summer Plans

By Elizabeth Friedman
May 10, 2013 - 12:38pm

With summer less than two weeks away, there’s finally an end in sight.  When all of us nearly-nine-month residents of Gambier, Ohio scatter across the globe, here are a few essentials to remember.   1. Relaxation - This may be a given, but sometimes it’s tough to wind down from a hectic week of finals and a school year’s worth of stress.  Even if you’re leaving Gambier en route to an amazing job, internship, or volunteer experience, be sure to take a breather -- though it might have to be 30,000 feet above the ground. No One Puts Penny in a Corner

By Anonymous Author
May 8, 2013 - 12:02pm

By Kelsey Trueblood On a recent stormy evening, I found myself facing an Econ problem set, a short paper and an imminent midterm. So I did what any bonafide senior girl enjoying post-comps season would do: poured a glass of wine, curled up in bed with my laptop and tracked down a website that would let me stream Dirty Dancing for free. Majoring in What You Love

By Rachel Larson
May 5, 2013 - 1:59pm

In the two years I have been at Kenyon, I’ve taken a smorgasbord of classes, both to complete my distribution requirements and for myself. That’s one of the beauties of being at a liberal arts school. We are encouraged to take the time to discover what we are truly passionate about before jumping on a pre-med bandwagon or declaring that time-intensive English major. Taking a mix of classes and majoring in a humanity or social science comes with a cost, though. The cost is this conversation, which we all have memorized at this point: Distant relative/ family friend: So, what college do you go to? READ MORE

Top 5 Things I Do Not Have Time For as a Senior Girl

By Susannah Green
May 2, 2013 - 3:06pm

All year, my friends and I have adopted an attitude towards guys/clothes/life that we privately refer to as "senior comfort." I recently discovered that we're not the only ones who've come up with this--there's a similar term floating around the Ivy Leagues known as "swug" or "senior washed up girl." Essentially, the concept is this: despite the various demands--real or imagined--that society may be placing on us as almost-Real Adult women (to, say, wear classy outfits or "have post-grad plans") we're kind of just doing whatever we want. If we want to wear sweatpants to the Cove, eat goat cheese straight from the package, or stay in watching our O.C....

Confessions of a Should-Be Doctor

By Emily Sakamoto
April 30, 2013 - 3:33pm

I never doubted that I’d be a doctor. I never doubted that I loved biology. Sophomore year I went at that frog dissection with vigor. Not in a sadistic, oh-hey-look-at-her-she’s-crazy kind of way, but with legitimate passion for science and anatomy. So I came to college with no doubts that I’d be biology major. That I was going to be pre-med. That I would go to medical school, do a residency, and be a practitioner. That I’d don those blue scrubs with pride, a genuine smile on my face as I handed a couple their new child. I saw ruptured aortas in my future instead of sharpened pencils and clerical work. I saw a swift and brilliant medical career with flasks of solutions and prescription pads and heroic emergency saves.  ...

Five Reasons You Should Start Watching Mad Men

By Jane Rosenfeld
April 25, 2013 - 4:09pm

Don’t lie. When you aren’t doing your school work or hanging out with friends, you are most likely illegally streaming movies or catching up on your favorite TV shows. If Mad Men isn’t the show filling your recent Netflix history, then you are wasting your time. Mad Men is one of my personal favorite TV shows today. Even though the show is on its fifth season, it is never too late to start. Here are the five reasons why starting Mad Men is an ABSOLUTE must. 1. Don Draper! READ MORE

Kenyon is a special school. We have a beautiful campus, a group of talented and sharp alumni, and one of the best student bodies in the world (it’s just true!). But Kenyon would not be Kenyon without its professors. Last year, The Princeton Review released the book The Best 300 Professors: Kenyon had nine professors on the list—more than any Ivy League university. We don’t need the statistics to prove that our professors are the best, though; we know that from conversations in class, meetings at Wiggin Street, and dinners at their homes. We pet their dogs, buy their books, and genuinely like being around them. READ MORE

It's My Summer: Reflections of a Camp Counselor

By Emma Miller
April 14, 2013 - 10:04pm

I have the best summer job in the world. No, I didn’t land an internship at some major company in New York City or an apprenticeship in DC that will jumpstart my future career. I am not working at a law firm or shadowing a surgeon. I am a camp counselor. I have spent every summer for the past 13 years at a day camp. I was a camper for seven summers, and this year will mark my sixth on staff. I feel like the luckiest person in the world. READ MORE

Lake Street Dive

By Elizabeth Friedman
April 4, 2013 - 10:00am

The video begins with outtakes of vocalist Rachael Price giddily yelling “Fun Machine!,” trumpet-player Mike “McDuck” Olson dancing in slow motion, drummer Mike Calabrese leaping from a Boston sidewalk and clicking his heels, and Bridget Kearney plucking the tune of “I Want You Back” on her bass.  Together, they’re Lake Street Dive, an up-and-coming band that took the Horn Gallery by storm on a wintry Wednesday night before Spring break.
