13 Ways NOT to Spend Your Summer

By Emily Sakamoto
April 24, 2013 - 12:50pm

Has that summer fever caught up to you yet? Do you smell the fresh cut grass and the lemonade? Are your fingers tingling with the anticipation of sprinting on the beach: ass in the sand, feet in the water, head tipped to the blazing sun? Do you close your eyes and see twinkling stars and midnight boat rides, the most amazing summer of your life with your very best friends in the world at your side? Are your daydreams a hazy mixture of ghost stories and camping and s’mores and all the things you’re going to do this summer rolled into one?   READ MORE

Top 5 Things to Check Off Your Kenyon Bucket List Before Summer

By Sarah Bence
April 23, 2013 - 3:03pm

With only a few weeks left in the semester it’s time to cross any remaining items off of your 2012-2013 Kenyon Bucket List.  I’ve compiled a bucket list tailored to spring at Kenyon, and my two favorite pursuits: playing outside and eating. 5. This may seem obvious, but next time you’re at Peirce, take your plates outside!  Whether you stake out at the patio outside Lower Dempsey or spread a blanket on the lawn in front of Peirce, this is something everyone should try at least once.   READ MORE

Early Voting for The Mount Vernon School Levy Begins Tomorrow: Abby Roberts Urges You to Vote YES

By Abby Roberts
April 22, 2013 - 11:54pm

Kenyon is a special school. We have a beautiful campus, a group of talented and sharp alumni, and one of the best student bodies in the world (it’s just true!). But Kenyon would not be Kenyon without its professors. Last year, The Princeton Review released the book The Best 300 Professors: Kenyon had nine professors on the list—more than any Ivy League university. We don’t need the statistics to prove that our professors are the best, though; we know that from conversations in class, meetings at Wiggin Street, and dinners at their homes. We pet their dogs, buy their books, and genuinely like being around them. READ MORE

UNrequired Reading: HCK summer picks

By Sara Spruch-Feiner
April 22, 2013 - 9:00am

There’s nothing like losing yourself in a 500+ page novel under the summer sun, am I right? With just 10 more days of class, it’s time to indulge in a little fantasy--oh the books I’ll read when, well, nobody’s making me. Last summer, I spent a week on the beach in which I barely spoke, so enraptured was I by Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding--even better, five of my friends felt the same way. READ MORE

Last Minute Ideas for Shock Your Mom

By Rachel Larson
April 19, 2013 - 1:50pm

The time has come where all of Kenyon gathers in the fishbowl that is Gund Ballroom and lets go of any dignity and decorum we pretend to have in class. Disgusting and scarring it may be, but for all the freshmen deciding if it is worth leaving your cozy room for, it is. Use one of these easy, last minute costume ideas and pop over, even if it’s just to witness the sheer madness that is Shock Your Mom. You will never look at your classmates the same way. 1. Purls of Wisdom for Knitting Newbies

By Abby Roberts
April 17, 2013 - 4:00pm

Confession: I cannot get into knitting. I don’t know why. A few years ago, it seemed like all my friends were going out and buying yarn by the pound. All of a sudden, knitting was cool for teenagers, and although my friends looked at balls of yarn and saw an exciting new trend, I just saw grandmas making tea cozies. I rolled my eyes and chose to abstain. It just didn’t capture my attention. READ MORE

7 International Tastes of Kenyon

By Faith Masterson
April 15, 2013 - 10:59am

Fun statistic: the class of 2016 is the most international class ever with 55 students from all around the world. Out of approximately 465 first-year students, that’s a pretty big percentage. As a freshman, I am proud of how diverse our class is; there are students from Morocco, Sweden, Singapore, Germany, and the Netherlands. Even someone from Kenya goes to Kenyon (so very punny). The International House put on a tasting which, as a baker, opened my eyes (and tastebuds) to so many more possibilities in the culinary world. READ MORE

It's My Summer: Reflections of a Camp Counselor

By Emma Miller
April 14, 2013 - 10:04pm

I have the best summer job in the world. No, I didn’t land an internship at some major company in New York City or an apprenticeship in DC that will jumpstart my future career. I am not working at a law firm or shadowing a surgeon. I am a camp counselor. I have spent every summer for the past 13 years at a day camp. I was a camper for seven summers, and this year will mark my sixth on staff. I feel like the luckiest person in the world. READ MORE
