YouTube Roundup: Summer Edition

By Annie Sheslow
May 3, 2013 - 12:34pm

Spring, you coy mistress, leading me around by the temptation to wear flip flops even if it means flip-flopping cold mud splatters up my skirt so my ass cheeks look like a Jackson Pollock painting. If you want the weather to commit to warmth as much as I do, here are some of my favorite musical reminders from the interwebs that summer is coming. Movies based on ‘the young people’ of Retro America promote summer as that idealized child’s utopia, forgetting about the rampant racism, sexism and all that good stuff of the mid 60s. Spielberg-style adventures await, and parents and internships lie dormant, out of mind in a sticky cloud of DDT. READ MORE

Top 5 Things I Do Not Have Time For as a Senior Girl

By Susannah Green
May 2, 2013 - 3:06pm

All year, my friends and I have adopted an attitude towards guys/clothes/life that we privately refer to as "senior comfort." I recently discovered that we're not the only ones who've come up with this--there's a similar term floating around the Ivy Leagues known as "swug" or "senior washed up girl." Essentially, the concept is this: despite the various demands--real or imagined--that society may be placing on us as almost-Real Adult women (to, say, wear classy outfits or "have post-grad plans") we're kind of just doing whatever we want. If we want to wear sweatpants to the Cove, eat goat cheese straight from the package, or stay in watching our O.C....

Our Parks & Recreation Addiction

By Sara Spruch-Feiner, Haleh Kanani
April 30, 2013 - 11:00pm

Parks and Recreation is a stellar sitcom starring gems of the modern comedy world such as Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Retta, Adam Scott, and more (plus, stellar guest stars including Vice President Joe Biden)! But besides being the wittiest show to come along in a very long while, it had the power to build friendships. Indeed, the friendship of the authors of this article is in part due to their mutual love of this fine program. Here, Haleh Kanani and Sara Spruch-Feiner discuss a few of their favorites from the first five seasons of P & R. If you’re just discovering the show and want some episodes to try out, we STRONGLY recommend the following.* FLU SEASON...

Confessions of a Should-Be Doctor

By Emily Sakamoto
April 30, 2013 - 3:33pm

I never doubted that I’d be a doctor. I never doubted that I loved biology. Sophomore year I went at that frog dissection with vigor. Not in a sadistic, oh-hey-look-at-her-she’s-crazy kind of way, but with legitimate passion for science and anatomy. So I came to college with no doubts that I’d be biology major. That I was going to be pre-med. That I would go to medical school, do a residency, and be a practitioner. That I’d don those blue scrubs with pride, a genuine smile on my face as I handed a couple their new child. I saw ruptured aortas in my future instead of sharpened pencils and clerical work. I saw a swift and brilliant medical career with flasks of solutions and prescription pads and heroic emergency saves.  ...
